An informing and useful discussion

I found Chapman's treatise to be a welcome addition to the growing range of literature that frames the subject of sustainability and "responsible" design. As in the design process, Chapman is quick to assert that designing responsibly doesn't always follow neatly preordained steps in perfect sequence. As such, he offers that to design sustainably is to design flexibly and with consideration of the human experience and emotion. To be sure, no one tome on this subject is the silver bullet with all the answers. Chapman's perspective is well worth adding to collection of forward-leaning discussions on the topic of designing sustainably and responsibly.

As an associate professor of design and architecture I find Dr. Chapman's work to be particularly valuable in the design studio, as well as in a history and theory seminar. Dr. Chapman's premise of studying with care the complex relationships we hold with manufactured "beloveds" resonates well with students and inspires them to seek unbeaten paths rather than reviving the tattered down-cycling route. Emotionally Durable Design's main thread remains widely relevant, especially when a broader swat of our world--not merely the design specialists--seek to revise how we may craft and interact more responsibly with objects that surround us. This work is researched with great care and crafted in an engaging manner. I would recommend it to all whom wish to rethink the nature of our built-environments.

Extremely wordy and difficult to keep my interest

The message of this book is a good one. If products can connect with users at a deeper level than aesthetics, then they will stay out of landfills longer. However, the enjoyment and understanding of this is covered in the long and drawn out writing of its contents. Id recommend avoiding this for another book on the same topic.

About the Author
Ronald Munson is Professor of Philosophy of Science and Medicine at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and a nationally acclaimed bioethicist. After receiving his Ph.D. from Columbia University, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Biology at Harvard University and a Visiting Fellow at the Harvard Medical School. Munson has served as a bioethicist for the National Eye Institute and the National Cancer Institute, as an editor for the AMERICAN JOURANAL OF SURGERY, and as a member of the Washington University Human Studies Committee. Munson's other books include RAISING THE DEAD: ORGAN TRANSPLANTS, ETHICS, AND SOCIETY, THE WOMAN WHO DECIDED TO DIE: CHALLENGES AND CHOICES AT THE EDGES OF MEDICINE, REASONING IN MEDICINE, and ELEMENTS OF REASONING, 7e (with Andrew Black). He is also the author of the novels NOTHING HUMAN, FAN MAIL, NIGHT VISION, and THE HARVARD GAME.

Is there a proofreader in the house?

First the good news. Ronald Munson's "Intervention and Reflection: Basic Issues in Bioethics" is about as complete an anthology in the field of bioethics as one is going to find. There is no major topic in the field that it fails to cover in depth, both through Munson's own extensive commentary and through the many articles he chooses from other authors. I have used it as the text in bioethics courses I have taught and both the students and I have found it quite helpful.

However, its lack of basic proofreading is inexcusable in a text published by Wadsworth, an otherwise reputable publisher of academic material. On page after page one finds errors that would have been caught through a cursory reading. A few of the more egregious examples: On page 49 a patient introduced as Prosenjit Boddar becomes "Foddar" five lines down and "Poddar" at the beginning of the next paragraph. On page 124 "Paul Geisinger" turns into "Raul" at the conclusion of the same paragraph in which he is called "Paul." In the following paragraph we read of viral particles that are destroyed "within a month to sue weeks." (What are sue weeks?) On page 143 the text speaks of "abstract more issues" (instead of "moral issues," I guess). These examples of sloppy (or perhaps no) proofreading are multiplied many times over in the 900 plus pages of the book.

One expects far more than this for the outrageous price this book commands. Certainly the $150.00 plus price tag per copy leaves some spare change for Wadsworth to hire a competent copy editor. Ronald Munson, who gives every indication from his writings of being a knowledgeable bioethicist, should be embarrassed that a book with such sloppy editing has come out under his name.

It is appalling how many typographical errors this book contains! It is absolutely sloppy. For instance, I am currently reading about that oh-so-famous book by Aldous Huxley "The Brace New World"! There is also that infamous medical experiment in Tuskegee committed against African "Ameircans". This is supposed to be an educational text about ethics. How ethical is it to charge this kind of money for a book the publishers couldn't even be bothered to run a spell-check program on?

So many typographical and spelling errors.....

I would have given this book at least 4 stars, if not for the many typographical and spelling errors. The editors did a terrible job reviewing this. There are so many errors it results in very frustrated reading at times. The content of this book overall isn't bad and is quite interesting. But the abundance of errors really distracts from the overall content.

I fully enjoyed this book

I fully enjoyed this book. I have seen the movie of the book before so I knew pretty much everything that was happening. So I can't judge if the story was suspenseful or not. However, the characters are definitely very different to the ones in the movie. I always can relate very well to the characters in Nora Roberts' books and it was no different here. That's why I enjoy her books so much.

After a career starting with Procter & Gamble, followed by the British Tourist Authority and the University of Surrey, Victor Middleton has been an independent management consultant, academic and author since 1984. He has a wide portfolio of international interests in travel and tourism, in marketing, research and sustainability. Over the years he has worked in many parts of the world and holds appointments as Visiting Professor at Oxford Brookes University and the University of Central Lancashire. He is a founder fellow (1977) and former chairman of the UK Tourism Society. A well known author, Victor Middleton has written several books and over one hundred articles and reports.
