About the Author
Charles Harrison is co-editor of Art in Theory 1900 - 1990 (Blackwell, 1992) and of Art in Theory 1815 - 1900 (Blackwell, 1997). He is the author of English Art and Modernism 1900 - 1939 (1994), of Essays on Art & Language, and of Modernism (1997) in the series "Movements in Modern Art". He has lectured widely in England, Europe and the USA and has been visiting Professor in History of Art at the University of Texas at Austin. He is currently Professor of the History and Theory of Art and Staff tutor in Arts at the Open University.

Paul Wood is co-editor of Art in Theory 1900 - 1990 (1992) and of Art in Theory 1815 - 1900 (1998). He has published widely on modern art and art history in a variety of journals and exhibition catalogues. He has edited The Challenge of the Avant Garde (1998) and co-edited Investigating Modern Art (1996) and has contributed to Realism, Rationalism, Surrealism, and Modernism in Dispute (both 1993) and to Critical Terms for Art History (1996). He is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Art History at the Open University.

Jason Gaiger is co-editor of Art in Theory 1915 - 1900 (1997). He has published various articles in the field of art history and aesthetics, and has been a visiting lecturer at the Universities of Essex, York and North London. He is currently Lecturer in Art History at the Open University.

this book, (series of books) is one of the best informed, more comprehensive art resources i have ever foind, it is wonderful to read the letters by the artists and the political and social situation surrounding their work and lives.

Great resource but the Kindle version TOC doesn't match the text!

This is a gold standard resource text for neonatologists and pediatric neurologists. However my complaint is that the Kindle version has a hyperlinked table of contents that corresponds poorly with the actual material. I find it very difficult to find the beginning of chapters relative to where the hyperlink sends me (it's often more than a few pages off).
Can someone fix this? (Should be pretty easy...)

A must own for child neurologists

Pros: This is the most comprehensive text available on the neurological development of the fetus and newborn. It's very well organized and a pleasure to read.

Cons: No colour photographs. I have both the Kindle and hardcover copies. I bought the hardcover years ago when it was printed beautifully on glossy paper. However, colleagues who have purchased the book since then have received it on matte paper where the image quality isn't as good as my version.

This is undoubtfully THE source of knowledge for the basics and more for neonatologists who deal with neurology and its problems in NICUs.
The e-book is not perfect-the links not always are related and many times the bok starts over from te beginning, but it's a GREAT source, even though.

A HAUNTING AND MESMERIZING TOUR DE FORCE

In 18th century France, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, born with no scent of his own, but with with a supernatural ability to detect the scent of others is driven to murder in order to create the perfect perfume. This extraordinarily original premise encompasses the most elegant, aristocratic and erotic novel I have ever read. Flawlessly written and drenched in irony, Perfume tells a haunting tale of a man reminiscent of the Phantom of the Opera, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Beauty and the Beast (beast), and even Faust. Amd finally! A writer with enough talent to let us experience Grenouille's thoughts and emotions. Although, of course, identification with him is impossible, (Grenouille is the most chilling character in literature) I did manage to understand Grenouille's all-consuming passion, much to Suskind's credit. Suskind's prose is lush and evokative (the decadance of 18th century France simply comes alive) without spilling over into the purple prose of books like Violin or The English Patient. Perfume is a bizarre tale, but it is also lyrical and hypnotic--almost a fairy tale of terror. If you're looking for something different, something special, I highly recommend Perfume. The only other book I've found to equal it in originality is Jose Saramago's Blindness. Perfume, however, remains my alltime favorite.

Fascinating, but not quite a Masterpiece

When the first english language version of "Perfume" was released in 1986, readers went crazy. Many placed it among the best books they'd ever read, myself included. A reread, fifteen years later yields a different, more muted, reaction. The book is good, very good. But it is not great.
"Perfume" succeeds so well because the premise is so startlingly novel. An olfactory genius in 18th-century Paris who can make a fortune creating perfumes more complicated and subtle than any ever made, is a sociopathic monster. Or as Suskind describes him, a "tick" who can roll up into a defensive ball or periodically drop himself into society. Grenouille is a compelling and disturbing character because Suskind has painted him in such realistic tones. Each effort to capture a new scent impels him farther, taking more chances and testing his limits, exploiting new techniques and his own criminal daring. This is true criminal pattern and makes Grenouille terrifyingly believable.
But the book can not be a great one, because Suskind's prose tends toward the overdone. Perhaps it reads better in the original German, but his maddening penchant for rephrasing and repeating the same notion and turning a sentence into a paragraph finally dulls the senses and sets the reader skimming along searching for the next important point.
The plot is so unique that it is brilliant. The execution is powerful, not only in Grenouille's characterization, but also because Suskind has done his homework and is smoothly at ease with 18th century mores and the science of perfume. But the squishy repetitive prose and unfocused paragraphs keep "Perfume" from joining the ranks of literary masterpieces.

One of the strangest books you'll ever read

Almost impossible to describe, PERFUME is one of the oddest and most unique books you'll ever read. Set centuries ago, if follows the life of a very emotionally crippled child (later adult) with a hugely sensitive sense of smell. Our "hero" becomes a master perfume maker and almost becomes dangerously obsessed with making a perfume that captures the essence, the very purity of a lovely virgin. Weird, huh?
The book, though compared to "literature" by some of the reviews here, moves very quickly and doesn't feel difficult to read at all. It does take a lot of time telling you about the manufacture of perfumes, but to be quite honest, this stuff is VERY fascinating the way it is presented here.
The book has moments of dry humor, moments of drama, and moments of pure, over-the-top grotesqueness. You've never read a book with a main character anything remotely like this. You've never followed a plot at all similar. And the ending is unexpected as well. It's not exactly a "feel-good" read, but when you're done, you'll have the unusual feeling of having gone down a literary road that's never been traveled before.
Highly, highly recommended. Just keep an open mind!!!

Y me dieron los síntomas que se describen en el libro una gripa muy fuerte. Paso un mes me enfermaba de todo me sentía muy débil tan débil que tuve que dejar de trabajar, hace dos semanas yo era un mueble en casa de mis papas y me sentía un parasito, sin vida social sin amigos 2 años sin salir de la casa pensé que era depresión, que era bipolar, que me estaba dando esquizofrenia o simplemente que en esta vida yo ya no iba a poder hacer nada y si pensé en lo peor, pesaba 26 kilogramos, hipertensión, tenía Esteatosis Hepatica y el colesterol alto, y exceso de glóbulos rojos tengo 33 años y el doctor me comento que tenía los síntomas de muchas personas de 65 años a un que tuviera mucha fuerza de voluntad siempre fracasaba por la debilidad de mis sistema inmunológico llego este libro que me dio una segunda oportunidad de vivir y voy a empezar la tercera semana y siento una vitalidad, una alegría, un condición física que la verdad ya se me avía olvidado lo que era sentirse bien de salud ya estaba acostumbrado a las enfermedades crónicas.
Conseguí los antibióticos costara lo que costara pague el doble si ya sé que está mal y me sorprendo de todo lo que somos capases de hacer con tal de tener un poco de salud yo lo veía como la última oportunidad de tratar de salir de esta trinchera créanme cada palabra que está escrita en el libro no están escrita en vano, los consejos y como abordar la atacar la enfermedad al iniciar una terapia todo eso es muy importante y está escrito detalladamente en el libro, lo primero que hice fue tomar un antibiótico y me sentí el triple de mal y en el libro explican muy bien que se tiene que hacer antes y que síntomas son los que se tiene que atacar primero para que no les pace lo que me paso a un que tengas las medicinas no es de tomárselas y listo por eso en el libro describe que hay barias técnicas para atacar esta enfermedad tan silenciosa y si tenía otras infecciones y me tenía que deshacer primero antes de administra y atacar a lyme directamente , en un rango del uno al diez me siento en un siete pero antes me sentía en un cuatro. Si hay mucha diferencia de hecho antes no tenía ni la paciencia ni la energía de escribir esta recomendación.
Espero tener la oportunidad de conocer al autor de este libro así como a toda le gente que hizo posible la traducción de este libro y la narración les estaré agradecido toda mi vida.
Un garrapata cambio el rumbo de mi vida una enfermedad minúscula destruyo mi mundo en el que yo era alguien muy emprendedor y lo lleno de amargura desaventura y desesperación y en esa oscuridad un libro si un libro me cambio y está haciendo que retome el camino que hace años abandone. Gracias mil gracias y no estoy exagerando tengo pruebas y estudios clínicos. Este libro no tiene que faltarle a ningún doctor y ojala pueda ser traducido a todos los idiomas porque este libro puede cambiar el mundo como cambio mi mundo y va a cambiar el de muchas personas.
