Review

"Strictly Personal and Confidential offers a unique look at a man reacting naturally to enormous pressures. Truman often had second, more prudent thoughts about what he called his 'spasms.' Sometimes he would scribble furiously and then stuff the result into his desk while he cooled off; on other occasions, he dictated blisterers to Rose Conway, his longtime personal secretary, and then returned the typescript with a diplomatic directive: 'Rose, file it. H.S.T.' In either case, he left behind a trail of entertaining and often fascinating documents, a short history of the frustrations of power, written at white heat."—Time

"The letters are in the spirit of 'giving them hell,' the bulldog approach that gave Truman his upset presidential election victory in 1948. They will not change the course of history, nor alter our perception of the man; but they will reinforce our feelings for a president who had grit and the not inconsiderable virtue of candor."—Philadelphia Inquirer

Superb correspondence from our greatest writing president.
By Timothy S. Hays
This is the Truman book you will truly enjoy-- after reading the 5,000 others. Harry S Truman was a real old-fashioned communicator who understood the value of honestly telling others what was on his mind (a great and thoughtful mind) at any appropriate juncture. He also had the good judgment-- once he had dictated and reviewed a letter to some notable-- to at times keep a particular letter from the mail, and save it exclusively for his own files. Truman spared himself countless embarrassments using this discipline.
If you liked "Harry and Ike," you'll love Poen's book, which you have to search for. The work is worth it-- Truman was the last of the Mohicans, a president who believed in telling both the American public and those with whom he interacted his honest assessment of a situation.
When I studied at the Truman Library in Independence in 1985, two years after first reading this book, I found the original correspondence. It is as priceless as Poen thoughtfully put it all together.

Fueling Freedom: Exposing the Mad War on Energy, by Stephen Moore, Kathleen Hartnett White

Fossil fuel energy is the lifeblood of the modern world. Before the Industrial Revolution, humanity depended on solar energy captured in living plants. But with the ability to harness the energy in coal and other fossil fuels, human quality of life and capacity for progress increased exponentially. With the recent advent of safe fracking techniques and incredible innovations in the energy industry, fossil fuels are as promising an energy resource as ever. Yet, highly politicized climate policies are pushing a grand-scale shift to new and less efficient energy sources. Is such a shift really necessary? If fossil fuel energy is supplanted by less efficient and less affordable alternatives for political reasons, will the modern world suffer?

From the Inside Flap

The past two centuries witnessed the most astonishing leap in human welfare in history. But now the leaders of the world's most prosperous and advanced nations are determined to undo it.

The ability to harness the enormous energy packed into fossil fuels—coal, oil, and natural gas—meant that for the first time, most human beings could enjoy a life that was not "poor, nasty, brutish, and short." Virtually all the necessities of life—food, heat, clothing, shelter—depend on the conversion of energy. It was the transition from muscle, wind, and wood to fossil fuels as the chief source of that energy that gave us modern life.

Incredibly enough, throwing that all away is now considered a serious national policy.

Radical environmentalists have convinced many of the global elite that the greatest threat to mankind is climate change produced by the burning of fossil fuels—a view that has hardened into a ferociously enforced dogma. The Paris Agreement of 2015 embodies their goal of an unprecedented regression to the limited horizons of preindustrial societies.

Exposing the madness of the green war on abundant energy, the economic and energy experts Stephen Moore and Kathleen Hartnett White explain:

Why the idea of replacing fossil fuel energy with the medieval technologies of wind, solar power, and biomass is a dangerous fantasy
How recent technological breakthroughs have made our supply of oil and gas virtually unlimited, exploding the myth of “peak oil”
Why the cruel green agenda will keep billions of people in grinding poverty and threatens the world with mass starvation
The value of the energy underneath federal lands and waters is at least $50 trillion
With a pro-America energy policy, the U.S. could be energy independent by the year 2020

The world faces a stark choice between unprecedented prosperity fueled by abundant energy or self-inflicted poverty. The stakes are higher than you think.

Know the arguments re energy sufficiency;
By EnbeUU
Read this book: there's a reason that gasoline is 2.93/gallon in highly regulated San Diego, California for premium (91 octane) cheapest I could find here; no less (veteran's day 2016); you will know why America massively decided to change from the policies of the last 8 years.
More jobs, reduced national debt, more oil and natural gas than Saudi Arabia, Iran, Russia, China and OPEC, combined is the claim. That is with existing technologies.

A Must Read for our Political Leaders
By Amazon Customer
This book should be mandatory reading for every member of Congress. Most people don't know but from 2008 to 2013 America became the #1 country with the most energy deposits (thanks to the discovery of shale extraction). The book rightly asserts that we could accomplish the following things with the new amount of oil and natural gas that is right under our feet:

1) make it harder for terrorist groups to make money on oil
2) lift up a billion people worldwide out of poverty - this year by providing cheap sustainable energy (coal, natural gas, electricity)
3) create over 5 million new jobs in the U.S.
4) pay of our 18 trillion dollar debt
5) have zero effect on climate change/global warming

People need to read this book to get a clear understanding what fossil fuels really are and why "renewables" aren't a good source of energy right now. Great book, easy to follow, important to know. I would ask any of my friends who are worried about climate change to try living with only renewable energy for one week. Go ahead, try it. Then you will understand that we are truly fortunate to have what we have under our feet.

Before the Revolution: America's Ancient Pasts, by Daniel K. Richter

America began, we are often told, with the Founding Fathers, the men who waged a revolution and created a unique place called the United States. We may acknowledge the early Jamestown and Puritan colonists and mourn the dispossession of Native Americans, but we rarely grapple with the complexity of the nation’s pre-revolutionary past. In this pathbreaking revision, Daniel Richter shows that the United States has a much deeper history than is apparent—that far from beginning with a clean slate, it is a nation with multiple pasts that stretch back as far as the Middle Ages, pasts whose legacies continue to shape the present.

Exploring a vast range of original sources, Before the Revolution spans more than seven centuries and ranges across North America, Europe, and Africa. Richter recovers the lives of a stunning array of peoples—Indians, Spaniards, French, Dutch, Africans, English—as they struggled with one another and with their own people for control of land and resources. Their struggles occurred in a global context and built upon the remains of what came before. Gradually and unpredictably, distinctive patterns of North American culture took shape on a continent where no one yet imagined there would be nations called the United States, Canada, or Mexico.

By seeing these trajectories on their own dynamic terms, rather than merely as a prelude to independence, Richter’s epic vision reveals the deepest origins of American history.

Review
Once every quarter-century or so, a book of great sweep and synthetic sophistication bursts onto the scene to recast our understanding of early American history. This masterful study, with its startling comparisons of European patterns of conquest, colonization, chaos, and cultural convergence, is a must-read. (Gary Nash, author of The Liberty Bell)

With breathtaking sweep and profound learning, Daniel K. Richter synthesizes the histories of Europe, North America, and the Atlantic world from the late Middle Ages to the late eighteenth century -- and he does it, in ways that no previous writer has managed, without carving his story into discontinuous regional narratives or succumbing to the teleology of the American Revolution. This book is nothing less than a masterpiece. (Fred Anderson, author of The War That Made America)

By placing early American history fully in its Atlantic contexts and seeing all participants as historical agents, Before the Revolution allows us to understand the genuine parallels as well as the contrasts in the experience of Americans through their layered pasts. (Karen O. Kupperman, author of The Jamestown Project)

An astute, thoroughly enjoyable mixture of political, economic and social history that culminates in a turbulent 18th-century North America whose people did not consider themselves on the verge of revolution but knew that things were not right. (Kirkus Reviews (starred review) 2011-03-15)

[Richter] demonstrates that U.S. history did not begin with the American Revolution, convincingly arguing that the ideas that manifested themselves in the mid-18th century with the rebellious colonists had their origins in such varied locales as the Mississippian Southeast and Europe of the Middle Ages...Any history written by this preeminent historian is an essential read for everyone interested in the deeper history of the United States. (John Burch Library Journal 2011-04-01)

So far it is one of my two or three favorite non-fiction titles of the year...Definitely recommended. (Tyler Cowen marginalrevolution.com 2011-04-07)

An elegantly written attempt to see colonial America from the indigenous perspective...In Richter's grand system, the continent's history comprises successive waves of adventurers, one atop another. Although the American Revolution "submerged these earlier strata," he argues that they nonetheless "remained beneath the surface to mold the nation's current contours." Walking atop the topmost strata, in other words, are thee and me, the terrain around us shaped by those who came first. The approach is bold, original and insightful...[A] masterly account...Before the Revolution is a book that by its very boldness invites intelligent argument. Every few decades, historians develop a new way of looking at the past. I am not talking about "revisionism" but unifying conceptual schemes, the sort of mental framework that Frederick Jackson Turner created in his argument for the importance of the frontier to our history or that Bernard Bailyn established in his studies of the American Revolution's ideological origins. Historians debated Turner for a long time and continue to debate Bailyn. I wouldn't be surprised if they were arguing with Richter a decade from today. (Charles C. Mann Wall Street Journal 2011-05-07)

Ultimately, [Richter's] history is a history of violence, of violence perpetrated by Europeans against Native Americans, by Native Americans against Europeans, and by both peoples against their own kith and kin. It is a dark and brutal story, although one in which the Native Americans are shown as for long holding their own, manipulating Europeans as trading partners and playing off one set of Europeans against another until the overwhelming British victory of 1763 no longer made this possible. There is precious little uplift here, and little sense of the more constructive characteristics of the brave new world that was rising amid the wreckage of the old. But, in patiently uncovering the layers beneath the rubble, Richter forcefully brings home to us that the American past belongs to many peoples, and that none should be forgotten. (J. H. Elliott New York Review of Books 2011-06-09)

The core of the work is a vivid, well-paced, stimulatingly opinionated and provocatively selective history of colonial Anglo-America...[A] spirited and engaging history of British North America...Richter's trenchant language excites enthusiasm. He evokes picturesque episodes engagingly--the agonies of Roanoke, the role of European goods in Powhatan power structures, the peripeties of indentured servants, the intolerance of Protestant fanatics, the poverty of seventeenth-century colonial home life, and the struggles of proprietors, rebels and crowns. (Felipe Fernández-Armesto Times Literary Supplement 2011-09-23)

The most important history books make us rethink things we think we know. In Before the Revolution: America's Ancient Pasts, Daniel Richter shows us a land built by successive waves of adventurers, immigrants and merchants, one atop the other. He insists on the primacy of human action in history--something not always popular in academia today. (Wall Street Journal 2011-12-17)

[An] unusual and useful synthesis of North American history between 1000 and 1763. (D. R. Mandell Choice 2011-12-01)

History with an eye for how we came to be
By Robert Walker
Daniel Richter's "Before the Revolution" is among a handful of recent major histories of early America that compel a serious re-thinking of our political and economic origins - particularly in light of current voices in national and state politics. First, one must admire the extraordinary grasp of detail evident in this work. The book must be a summa of an entire lifetime of careful study. But more importantly, details in this work paint the larger movements of life throughout the settlement of this country. Richter's conceptual handle on the themes of America's early development are richly conveyed throughout every stage in this history. One looks to historians for far more than facts and Richter delivers in very compelling ways. The prose is lucid and gives a solid narrative sense without losing the reader among tangential episodes. The book gives yet more evidence of how profoundly early American culture and settlement events were shaped by religious and political trends in England and Europe. Richter captures the conflation of spiritual/religious motives with raw greed for land and power in ways that make a mockery of typical lay renderings of this time period. One's understanding of the sources for slavery of Native Americans, Irish and English down-and-outs,and then of Africans are exhaustively conveyed in this text. One cannot walk away feeling utterly freed from the lasting effects of this history.

Richter's work stands among several others of note for this time period. Fred Anderson's "The Crucible of War" is another richly detailed and comprehensive account of some of the same period. Kevin Phillip's "The Cousin's War" underscores some similar themes with again a rich narrative and conceptual grasp in showing how the issues arising from the English Civil War fed into the American Revolution and Civil War. Gary B. Nash's "The Unknown American Revolution" compels a radical re-understanding of the various forces leading into the American Revoultion - again with emphasis on the curious admixture of ideals and raw power-thrusting behaviors. Alan Taylor's "The Civil War of 1812" picks up a few decades later, but is again a masterful treatment of many of the same themes contained in these other histories.

I underline as I read to capture the most salient or instructive passages. Suffice it to say I found myself underlining something on almost every page of Richter's work. What a great text to use for a history course! To my reading, Richter and the other authors mentioned above make of most "history" that is taught in the secondary schools mere propaganda. We live in a bubble of fantasies about what our country was made from and judging from contemporary politicians' statements, we continue to fabricate moral myths from a past that offers little moral inspiration.

Magnificent, frustrating
By Larry Gilstrap
The power and clarity with which Professor Richter writes are absolutely breathtaking. The author presents a richly nuanced picture of the dependence of developing societies and civilization upon such factors as climate, agriculture, and religion. Alas the darker side of humankind is also highlighted in its tendency toward criminal conduct (warfare, extortion, and slavery) along with the cynical manipulation of religious beliefs to defraud the more gullible, yet productive, members of the local population.

The author draws many parallels between North Americans and European developments during the Medieval Warm Period. While Europeans were building magnificent cathedrals, the indigenous Americans were busy constructing huge mounds for burials and other religious rituals. And on both continents, a pyramidal caste structure emerged to enrich and enthrone the most successful thugs and warlords. This is the true origin of all who claim royalty. Similarly, the origins of capitalism, and patriarchal entitlements are shown to be a consequence of English and European fiefdoms.

Professor Richter's wonderfully concise condensation of centuries of interaction between competing parties is both a blessing and a curse. Each chapter is filled with so many points worthy of contemplation that I was routinely frustrated by the pressure to continue on without pause. Thankfully, he provides a superb epilogue to sum up many of the points that might occur to the reader along the way. For instance, he points out that the Native Americans were by no means passive victims of European aggression, land theft, and racism. Indeed, they had become skilled in the process of playing one European super-power against the other, to increase their own power and dominate their traditional foes.

There is some irony, if not actual karma, that the Indians exploited the conquistadors strategy of pitting local tribal chiefdoms against one another. In addition, the fact that the Indians were frequently at war with one another, and made slaves of captives, also implies some sort of cultural karma, which the author does not care to mention; and probably shouldn't in what is otherwise an excellent text for American pre-Revolutionary History.

Finally, I found his ultimate assessment a bit off-base. Mr. Richter seems to think that we, in the twenty-first century, have evolved past imperialism. I would argue that is a wishful fantasy, and not a reflection of the reality which he worked so hard to detail. Still, the author provides a magnificent overview of the epic sagas leading up to the American Revolution. And for that I thank and congratulate him.

Strong narrative, interpretation not entirely convincing
By Aggressive Arms
Prof. Richter's "Before the Revolution: America's Ancient Pasts" attempts an interpretive history of North America and European contact beginning in medieval history and ending with the French and Indian War (or Seven Years' War). The strengths of the book lie in its broad-scope narrative that encompasses not only English, but also French and Spanish colonization in North America, but, at least as important, Native American prehistory and history. The cohesiveness of the narrative is strong, as Richter manages to move for the most part chronologically, with few jumps forward or backward, while still maintaining wide geographic coverage. And he provides some very useful insights along the way, such as the fact that Protestant colonists likely felt that the British crown's policy of religious toleration was tyrannical.

His interpretive goals however do not seem fully achieved. His aim is to describe several eras of colonization and interaction thematically, and he labels them, successively, as those of Progenitors, Conquistadors, Traders, Planters, Imperialists, and Atlanteans; and he further attempts to demonstrate how each of the latter eras manifested the themes of those preceding it. So he is attempting an interpretation that is somewhat at odds with itself -- delineating separate eras in colonial history, but also arguing that the dominant themes of preceding eras were always manifest. Neither goal is completely achieved: Not every of his eras in colonial history seems so distinct, and the connections Richter purports to draw often come across as more his own personal view than truly evidence-based. By way of example, Richter spends several pages describing the demise of Chaco Canyon, a horrifically hierarchical prehistoric Native American civilization in the Southwest, though there is very little connection between that culture and the bulk of the action in the book; and when he later attempts a connection, the best he can muster is "It is tempting to speculate that the entire experience [of Spanish repression of seventeenth-century rebellions] summoned bitter memories of Chaco Canyon's tyranny." Admittedly in that instance he is working with inadequate evidence, but the point is that sometimes the interpretation seems a strain. The other noticeable interpretive feature of the book is its divergent views of Native Americans and Europeans, the former almost always imbued with legitimate grievances, the latter more often characterized as double-dealing, greedy, incompetent, or bungling. It is undoubtedly based in Prof. Richter's sincerely held beliefs, and intended as a corrective to years of alternatively biased histories, but the reader sometimes senses that a truly balanced history is still to come. In all, however, this is a very strong synthesis of current historiography and a clearly written, informative narrative.

The Necessary Tools for Positively Redirecting Our Lives
By Dallas
The Art of Resignation covers and SOLVES the problems associated with the ideas that every employee has thought about time & time again.

"What would happen if I were to quit my job right now? What would my boss even think? Can I pull this off without seriously upsetting everyone at the office? They would HATE me."

We've all been there. Figuring out how to even begin the process of resignation truly is an art-form and science in itself. From the very moment in which we approach our closest office-buddy with the idea of leaving, all the way to having "the conversation" with the boss-man himself. It isn't an easy time by any means.

Steven Feiner visits these niche topics of resignation in-depth, in this thought-provoking book of his. Luckily for us, he delivers. Feiner provides us with the necessary tools to lead, grow, and completely redirect our work lives.
