Maura Hanrahan is the award-winning author of Tsunami: The Newfoundland Tidal Wave Disaster and several other books. She has a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and works for the rights of the Indigenous people of Canada. She and her husband, Paul Butler, live in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, with their daughter, Jemma.

Meditations for Women with Depression

For those women looking for comfort or inspiration as they deal with depression, Spirit and Dust is a book that is misnamed. Although it says that it offers mediations for women with depression, it is instead the telling of one woman's depression, her encounters with others who are also struggling with depression and instances where she sought comfort or gained insight. This book would be helpful for those who are trying to understand someone who is facing the illness of depression as it gives great insight into the feelings and thoughts and valleys of those women who deal with this demon disease.

Although much of the advice in the book is spot on, some of it could cause one suffering from depression to feel guilt and possibly give in to the disease. Hanrahan creates a fine line between what she went through and what is good for others. She doesn't deal directly with medication although she does indicate that only after she sought therapy was there really any change. No where did I find that she talked about the many possibilities of dealing with depression - medication, no medication, medication and therapy, no medication and therapy only - the combinations are as varied as the people suffering from this disease.

The quotes that are used throughout the book do offer good opportunities for reflection and some of the author's entries do as well. I was disappointed to see that in the bibliography there was no references to books on depression; it contained only the books of the women mystics who were quoted.

Overall, the book is a good look into the journey of women with depression. It is worth a read just for more understanding of the disease.

The book was written for both veteran and rookie teams - we talked with dozens of teams about their experiences with FLL and gathered tips, advice, worksheets, and more. The book has over a dozen downloadable files for use by teams (website address provided in the book) that can be modified as desired.

The book has 16 chapters in all plus one appendices. Chapters include:

(2) How FLL Works (3) Guidelines and Rules (4) Finding Equipment, Mentors, and Funding (5) Starting or Building a Team (6) Managing Your Team (7) The Team Experience (8) Coaching a Team (9) NXT vs RCX (10) Basic Building (11) Building Techniques for the Robot Game (12) Sensors (13) Getting Organized for Programming (14) NXT-G Programming Concepts (15) The Project and (16) Tournaments and Beyond. Appendix includes a list of useful Resources for FLL teams and coaches.

About the Author

Jonathan Daudelin has been competing in FLL since age 13. In 2007, his team won the First Place Robot Performance and First Place Innovative Robot awards at the World Festival after their robot achieved perfect scores in all three rounds. He is a contributor to The NXT Step blog and a co-author of "The LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Idea Book" (No Starch) and "The NXT Robotics Competition Workbook" (self-published).

A Great Reference for Both New and Old Teams!

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a program for middle-school age children to explore robotics and a global theme that has grown to be a worldwide phenomenon involving thousands of children and adults. While that sounds very impressive, it's also very intimidating. With so many people already involved, how can a new person start a team? Is there a right way? How can a team grow and succeed?

FIRST LEGO League: The Unofficial Guide, by James Floyd Kelly and Jonathan Daudelin, is an excellent introduction to FLL for those wanting to start a team. Going through a step-by-step formula, the book explains everything about FLL from information about the program itself to starting a team and competing.

Every step is almost exhaustively documented - I say almost because the writing style is far from exhausting. The books voice is a very relaxed one, much like a tour guide that really enjoys talking about his tour route. Such points as fundraising and team management are covered in the book, which are very important yet not really mentioned anywhere else.

Building the team is a large component of the book, but so is building with the MINDSTORMS system, and a majority of the book is devoted to building and programming robots. Again, the text is engaging and step-by-step, showing how and more importantly, why a process or build method is advantageous. One inadvertent side effect of reading this is realizing what a successful team has to know - while my respect for FLL competitors is high, the Unofficial Guide gave me a much higher appreciation of the work needed to make a quality team.

And I guess that's the best way to describe this book - it's a quality book that I strongly recommend. For a group wanting to form a new team, this will be an invaluable resource to guide the kids (and adults) to competition. For those who have been in FLL, this book is also good because it has some nice tips and advice - the sidebar about test driving a robot on page 170 is a great piece of advice to both new and experienced teams!

And it has me wishing I could start a team...

FLL, from start to end, a must have for coaches and teams

This book is a must have for all the First LEGO League teams, and their coaches.
Although I'm an expert on LEGO MINDSTORMS, I still consider this book good value for money, it contains a lot of expert tips and tricks in getting your team organized and well set for the tournament. The easy writing style is even for non native English readers good to read. The layout is comfortable, and the side notes are a real added value.

The first chapters handle some background that is good to know, to make the team enthusiastic about the FLL games.
Chapter 4 contains a downloadable fundraising letter that shows that FLL goes beyond playing with LEGO robots, it also explains how to do business in real live.
Then the chapters about managing the team, is a must read for new coaches, but also experienced managers could learn form it.
The technical chapters, near the end of the book, handle a lot of tips and tricks on how to improve your LEGO robot and its program. I consider that many teams still can learn from these chapters. During several FLL finals, I was present as a "technical first aid doctor" for the teams that ran into "unforeseen" problems. I'm sure with this book at hand those problems would not have occurred.

This book really handles FLL form start to end, and encourages you to participate in the Fist LEGO League.

Something for Rookie and Veteran FLL teams

There is something for all FLL teams, both rookie and veterans in this book. Also, if you are checking out FLL and trying to decide if you want to begin a team, this is the place to get the information necessary to make that decision. I have been involved in FLL for over 6 years and I found helpful information as I read through FIRST LEGO League: The Unofficial Guide.

All new FLL teams need this book. The whole program is laid out clearly, with not only necessary information, but also with much helpful additional information. There is so much to learn in FLL and this book will guide you from how to start a team, how to do fundraising, how to handle team meetings, how to do basic robot buidling and programming, how to tackle the research project and much more, then onto what to expect at a tournament and beyond.

The format of this book is easy to read and understand. Additionally, it is laid out in such a way, that you can easily find the topic you need or you can choose to start at the beginning and read all the way through.

You will not be dissapointed by this book.

It's refreshing to see a book on 100 ADS Design Examples that adopts a practical hands on approach through the use of computer simulation to make the subject come alive on screen. It's the same approach used by RF and microwave design engineers to develop products these days. Learning with hands-on computer simulation also develops better engineering intuition than reading an old-fashion textbook laden with math equations. Disappointed

I have been managing patients with chronic non-specific LBP for over a decade. The book is well written, however I find the fact that Peter O'Sullivan should have had at least a chapter in this book. I cannot understand the reason for this not to happen, apart from big personal differences amongst the authors and O'Sullivan. I'm not saying here that I prefer one to another, but a book that is entlited state of the art and science cannot levae O'Sullivan's views and experience out of the question.
More chapters should have been dedicated in providing treatment suggestions and programmes.

Good book for the study of motor control of the lumbar spine.

This book is very interesting as it explores all the dimensions of motor control for the lumbar spine. All the theory is presented in a very wide spectrum of themes concerning motor control. The authors attempt to expose all aspects of motor control of lower back, including the most applied and clinical KNOW HOW of motor control of the lumbar spine. The only BUT is exactly what the title doesn't specify: it concentrates its study of spinal control on the lumbar spine, not the spine or the back. This is a very good book for newcombers in the field.

Marian has incrusted her pages with decoration, linear curves married to straight lines, step-and-repeat patterns that mystify, tiny, multi-colored, and intricate, a synthesis as organic as lyrics and musical notes. Each page is a cornucopia of texture, and snuggled within are her words. Fresh, lucid, sage, and romantic that echo the decoration. Many words are light-hearted, some deeply personal, a few are set in a personal font, coded and decorative, titled "Secret," that are perhaps infused with romance (decoration in itself is a romantic idea). The chapter on the Griffth Park Observatory in Hollywood is a gem in the essence of the word. A jewelry collection whose existence is strange--in an observatory? One to rival the exquisite output of Julius Arthur Rosenberg. The chapter is worth the price of the book. Marian is a dear friend and rarely have I encountered written words that so accurately replicate an author's spoken voice. The book is beautiful and ideosyncratic, at first glance the binding appears to be simple, textured foil. A closer inspection reveals Marian's genius of densely varied curves that miraculously step-and-repeat, a baroque and subtle reminder that Marian's genius and kind, introspective heart is to be visited time, and time again.

Engaging, surprising, and delightful

While reading Marian Bantjes book I laughed and cried. I was provoked to think with my heart. For some chapters I needed a tissue, others, a dictionary. And I love that Marian is brave enough to cuss on the printed page. The texture, design and content is delicious and thoroughly entertaining.

I was grateful for the opportunity to look into another world and to be stretched. (I mean who thinks to critique the alphabet?) What a joy! My eyes darted from text to design and back again on every page, afraid I would miss something, as if it might disappear if I didn't understand it all at once. Lucky for me I could slow down as each page waited patiently for me to catch up, and read again. I was able to soak up the entire story and design before I continued all the while, knowing I will read it again, because there is more here than a first read can grasp.

Read this book with a notebook by your side, it is perfect food for rich conversations. Every chapter is a complete story and as much as I wanted to read it all in one sitting, it is better to savour this masterpiece. Like a piece of good chocolate, too much all at once would be opulent, but not obscene, after all I Wonder, By Marian Bantjes is the "good stuff".

An Essential for the Jewelry Collector

If you collect jewelery fine or costume this book is a must. Those little marks that you need your 10X loupe for are deciphered! This is not an exhaustive list because there are new treasures found every day but it will really help the collector figure out just who made that lovely item! Get this one now.........

Good book but missing info!!!!!!!

This is a great ref book for Jewelry Companies that are long gone, their marks and company background. However it is missing some well known companies from the 50's and 60's but to it's credit there are also marks that ARE included that belong to little known companies. The layout could be improved as sometimes companies marked with a logo, and not the name, finding the logo means you have to search the whole book if you don't know who it was made by. That being said the book is a must have for all jewelry collectors as the info contained within is NOT the opinion of the author, it is taken from actual historical books, and vintage Trade guides etc.
