Blood of Rome: Caratacus is the first novel in the Blood of Rome series. It tells the true story based upon historical fact of one man's fight against the most powerful empire in the known world. Forced to fight against overwhelming odds, in a war he didn't desire, Caratacus defies Rome and halts its charge across the lands of Albion, an Island they call Britannia. The Roman Senate thought that it would be a quick, decisive victory against uncivilised barbarians on the edge of their north-western frontier, they were wrong. This is the story of the invasion of Britannia in AD 43 as it has never been told before.

Blood of Rome: Caratacus by John Salter
By Paul Bennett
This, the debut novel of John Salter, is the story of the legendary Briton Caratacus and his quest to protect his homeland from the Claudian invasion of Britain. Most of the book focuses on the 2nd Augusta Legion under it's Legate Vespasian as he strives to convince the various tribes to acquiesce to Roman rule and order. The author brings to life some very interesting characters both Roman and Briton in this well researched tale. The Britons Caratacus, Adminius and Brenna bring to life the differences of opinion as to whether submission to Rome or the destruction of the invader is the better choice for their home and people. Their motives and emotions are vastly different from each other(I won't say who is of which opinion so as to not reveal a spoiler, though Caratacus' choice is probably well known) and are the heart and soul of the conflict.

As in any good story there are plenty of plot twists especially one towards the end that is very nice yet very nasty and I was taken completely by surprise. The battle scenes are well done, the gore is not overly excessive yet enough so that you get the feel of what it would have been like to be a Roman legionnaire facing a menacing group of frenzied, woad covered warriors. You also get to know what it was like to be an advance scouting party of Roman cavalry from the intense fear to the comradeship of the men involved. I am looking forward to the next volume in this saga as the battle for Britain is far from over and Caractacus is as determined as ever to throw the Romans back into the sea. My rating for this is 3.8 stars.

I enjoyed the story but there were a few issues...
By Jason Frost
I saw `Blood of Rome: Caratacus' on Ben Kane's FaceBook page as he was talking about his Romani Walk charity. I was in the mood for a Roman novel and I trust Ben not to recommend swill, so I decided to give it a shot. I'm glad I did.

Unlike a lot of the Roman books I read, this one is told mainly from the standpoint of the scouts. That was a unique turn. I've always heard from legionaries, slaves, citizens, and Generals, but rarely the scouts. Hearing about combat from their perspective gave me a different perspective.

This premise is one that we've all heard; Caratacus and his audacity to defy the might and power of Rome. This story is told through the eyes of Varro, Veranius, Decimus, Valerius, and Brenna, and it's a Roman story through and through. Right down to the fighting, blood, brutality, loyalty, and a few (not enough) brown-chicken-brown-cow moments.

One of the things John Salter did well to show us how frustrating it was for Rome to keep getting bested by these "barbarians." Hell, I could have told them not to ride through certain areas that were ripe for ambush! Rome is powerful on the field and the Britons are powerful in the trees and forest. Reading about the scouting mission from both sides that ended up with blood and torture are the stuff my dreams are made of.

I also enjoyed how John didn't fall into the trap that so many first time writers do: he didn't spare his main characters. From anything. Matter of fact there is one scene in here that is just... painful. But I was riveted because I just had to find out if he would go there. He did. Oh my goodness he did! I've always had the wish that I could go back in time, reading the adventures in this book only cemented that dream further. John paints a very vivid literature drawing and I enjoyed the trip.

However...

This book is a five-star read but I only gave it four. Why? The editing. I really hate harping on this but new authors MUST get it together. Mistakes happen, yes. But they shouldn't happen frequently. If I catch a mistake then something's wrong. Also, editing mistakes will ruin the flow of a story. I found myself having to reread passages in this story trying to figure things out. And this happened more than once.

Now John did say in his `author's note' that there might be grammatical errors and mistakes, so there is that. But my thing is any mistakes need to be few and far between. Like most indie authors he still pulls down a full-time gig, and maybe that's why I'm a bit more forgiving than I have in the past. Being an indie bookstore bloke myself, I really appreciate the indie authors because I know and understand their struggle. That being said, indie authors must be held to the same standard as major publishing house authors. I don't see Conn Iggulden putting a disclaimer at the end of his books asking us to be forgiving for editing errors, so I don't want to see it from John. Or any other indie author.

Will that deter me from getting his second book, `Blood of Rome - Retribution'? Hell no. I'm slightly anal... not stupid. I can spot talent when I come across it and John has it. I will just trust that his mistakes will go the way of Veranius's... never mind.

A terrific debut novel
By Amazon Customer
This debut novel from John Salter contains elements of everything it takes to entertain - raging battles, murder, treachery, suspense and even love. Ordinarily, historical fiction is not the type of novel I would read but it was recommended by a friend as I was looking for a new genre to read. I was not disappointed!

This book was intelligently written, thought provoking and exceptionally entertaining. I became totally immersed in the characters, both Roman and British. The author has an innate knack of drawing you into the scene where you feel as if you are a participant. I could hear the arrows flying past, smell the damp and mud underfoot and sense the fear that enveloped the warriors before going into battle. I rooted for the good guys and yelled at the bad guys, although at times it was difficult to distinguish between the two, and was shocked at the cunning twist revealed near the end.

The story starts slowly with a bit of Roman history but soon picks up pace once the Romans reach Britannia's shores and fair crackles along until it reaches its blistering climax.

This book deserves five stars for the development of the characters alone and I am eagerly awaiting book two in the Blood of Rome: Caratacus chronicles.

A must read for nutritionists/dietitians beginning a practice!
By Ryah Nabielski
As a nutritionist with a part-time private practice, I can certainly relate to many of Amy's stories navigating her first year in practice - from deciding who to partner with to creating various offerings and programs. Amy's candid account of this process certainly would have been nice to read when I was starting out, but is equally as helpful now! This isn't a "how to" or "step by step" formula for creating a successful practice, although it does offer practical advice on topics such as money, charting and insurance reimbursement. This book is truly about a heart-centered and intuitive approach to creating the life you love and defining success on your own terms.

Helpful and Informative!
By jeanie lee
As someone who has been thinking about striking out on my own, this book makes the process seem not so intimidating and unreachable. In our schooling experience and internships, there were no opportunities to learn about private practice and the details involved.

This book provides practical advice from someone who has already been there and her experiences provide great insight into that world.

Information is presented in an clear, easy-to-read format and it answered some questions I've had. The friendly tone of the text makes it very enjoyable to read. You don't feel like you're being lectured, rather, it's like a friend talking to you.

I definitely suggest anyone who is interested in private practice to get it.

Great resource for students too!
By Claire
As an RD-to-be with a dream of starting my own nutrition practice, this book is resource I've been looking for. Dietetic education programs simply don't teach the entrepreneurial skills required to launch a business. In her book, Amy provides this information with an in-depth account of her first year in business. The conversational tone and real anecdotes of lessons learned make this a fun, easy to read guide for anyone looking to start their own nutrition practice. Amy is honest in telling her story, giving readers all the details of financials, networking, insurance and marketing. The book left me feeling inspired and confident that this dream is realistic with enough passion, work ethic and self-discipline.

The Thresl Chronicles:

Thresls are rare shapeshifting creatures that can only be born on one planet in the universe. In order to transform from beast to man they have to bond with a human mate. Once transformed they are forever bound to the one they've chosen, however, sometimes what should be an automatic process turns into a traumatic event.

While mates and enemies battle for the good of the Thresls, the cat creatures themselves will ultimately have to decide if they want a planet of pure bred shifters or if they can make room for their half-bred children and stubborn human mates.

Duke Betrayed by Amber Kell

Book five in the The Thresl Chronicles series

When Duke Hellbur is accused of treason against his people, he bonds with medic Balaze to keep his human form and prove his innocence.

Balaze admired the duke whenever he visited the castle, but finding someone attractive and wanting to be theirs for eternity aren’t the same thing. After surviving the death of his first Thresl mate, Balaze isn’t exactly eager to go through that pain again. However, the duke doesn’t take no for answer.

Those who are guilty will have to be uncovered if the two men ever plan on finding peace with each other. When Hellbur and Balaze go off on an interplanetary adventure, can they find common ground or will their enemies tear them apart?

One of the best in the series!
By Sophia Rose
I really enjoy this series and love the Thresl cats and their mates so its automatic to just grab up the next book when it comes out. This book takes up right where the last one left off. It grabbed me early and left me even more pleased than ever with this series.

The story opens with the medic, Dr. Walter Balaze, watching over the unconscious Duke in his care. Duke Hellbur has been healed from the explosion, but something else keeps his body down. Balaze is attracted to the duke and worries for him. Soon the King-Mate arrives to explain that the duke was taking experimental drugs to suppress his Thresl nature so he could stay human even without a bond mate. Balaze is not really worried knowing what those drugs probably did to the man's body.

Hell wakes up to the best scent he's ever smelled and the best rest he's experienced in ages. A soft voice calls him 'kitty' and begs for him to wake up. He loves that voice too which is the source of the scent that screams 'mate' to him. Hell promptly comes to alertness, pounces on the pretty male and bites him to initialize their bond. His new mate is cute and shocked, but for the first time in centuries, Hell's body settles down from the war it was under raging for a mate. He shifts and barely begins to explain to his mate when Friln arrives to share that he's going to be arrested for treason which will hopefully draw out the real traitors. Friln says he'll wait until the duke is given his health clearance.

With that bit of news, Hell grabs his mildly protesting mate and goes on the run to find out who set him up so he can clear his names. He now is doubly motivated because after he settles matters, he has a handsome mate to enjoy.
Balaze understands the need to go with Hell for safety purposes, but he wish he meant more to Hellbur than a convenience bond and he wishes to be of real help on Hell's quest that takes them across the galaxy.

The space adventure leads them to so many things. They gain the clues they need, find Saint, help a colony of suffering Thresls, discover what they seek, and also find that it serves to draw them closer in their bond. It all comes to a close leaving the door open for Saint and Mars' adventure.

From the get-go, I was into this one. It offered the passionate mating, the danger of the chase, intrigue, relationship development and scene time with Saint. Hell and Balaze are great together. They've both been in a mate bond before, lost their mates, and know exactly what they want. I loved how both communicate well though Hell has trouble verbalizing his feelings. Their personalities fit so well together too. They were a blazing hot couple, but tender too. I enjoyed seeing both of them use their skills in this story.

All and all, this was one of the strongest outings in the series in my opinion.

didn't really enjoy this one.
By HisBabes
Of the Thresl Chronicles so far, I feel this one fell short. None of them are great novels and all are a bit scattered but this one was really scattered and there were several instances where I thought either 'well that was dumb' or 'well why don't they just...' In an advanced society that has interstellar travel, shape shifting abilities, scanners & advanced medical systems they don't have some way of making a simple phone call?

Yes, all of this authors stories are novellas and yes they are simple brain candy, nothing serious and a good way to relax and turn off higher thinking but even I can only suspend so much disbelief even for a paranormal/science fiction story.

I do plan to continue this series as well as her other work, I just hope I don't continue to be let down.

Duke Hellbur is being set up. He knows he is not a traitor but someone close to him is. Can he find out the culprit before his name is tarnished beyond repair? In Duke Betrayed by Amber Kell Duke Hellbur is determined to find out who is using his name and connections to sell Thresls. In order to do so he must remain human and Balaze is the key to doing so. But Balaze has already lost his Thresl and doesn’t want to experience the pain of loss again. Can he forgive Hellbur for taking away his choice?
I really enjoyed this addition to Ms. Kell’s Thresl Chronicles series. Hellbur is an honorable Thresl who has given his all to protecting not only his brethren but his king as well. And now someone has used his network to subvert everything his has worked for. And when his life is nearly ended it causes his body to revert to his cat form, a form in which he cannot use to clear his name. I really enjoyed Hellbur and Balaze. You would not have expected them to fit but they did. They had such different personalities and desires for the future but somehow as they followed the threads of deceit they meshed. Hellbur needed to learn what it means to really love and Balaze had to learn to trust his heart again. Ms. Kell wove their differing needs in such a way that it felt believable and real. The story was action packed and well written. I am a fan of this series and with this addition by Ms. Kell did not disappoint!

Amazon.com Review
Mysteriously missing parents, a boy who speaks Cat, an extraordinary floating circus, and a handsome hoodlum villain...get ready for one of the most spectacular adventure stories around! When young Charlie Ashanti returns home one day to find an empty house, he launches immediately into the journey of a lifetime. Sleazy Rafi, a teenage boy who can usually be found lurking around the playground, shows up, claiming that Charlie’s parents have gone on a trip. Our hero plays dumb and quickly escapes Rafi’s clutches only to find himself stowed away on the most remarkable ship the Thames River has ever kept afloat. Taking advantage of his astonishing ability to speak the language of cats, Charlie sets in motion a chain of communication from London to Paris via scruffy alley toms, fluffy lap kitties, and even a ferocious lion or two. Along the way, the clever boy manages to stay one step ahead of the rogues pursuing him, but unfortunately always one step behind his parents.!

Penned by a mother/daughter team who call themselves Zizou Corder, Lion Boy is the first in a trilogy that is bound to become a classic. Readers will shriek when they read the evil yet tantalizing words at the conclusion--"To Be Continued..."--and won’t rest until they get their hands on all three breathtaking, funny, well-written titles. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

From Booklist
Gr. 4-8. At the start of this fantasy set in the not-too-distant future, by a British mother-daughter team writing under a pseudonym, the scientist parents of young Charlie Ashanti are kidnapped for their newly discovered asthma vaccine. The classic drama of a child who must rely on his own resources is enriched by two evocative plot elements: Charlie's ability to communicate with cats, and Thibaudet's Floating Circus, a shipboard big top that offers him passage to Paris, the destination recommended by his feline advisors. En route Charlie bonds with the circus' homesick lions, and his daring plan to free them brings the novel to an exciting but abrupt conclusion that will leave readers clamoring for the second volume in the planned trilogy. A 22-page description of a circus performance may test children's attention spans, and Charlie's levelheaded strategizing sometimes strains credibility. Still, such flaws will hardly matter once readers are caught up in the suspenseful action and the pleasures of visiting a plausible, if troubling, version of our future. Jennifer Mattson

Grandson loved it!!
By Maggie's Musings
Jacob, who is 10 and a prolific reader, read straight through this book without stopping except during meals and school. It had been assigned reading last year, but he hadn't borrowed it from the library in his British school. Now that he is back in America, the book really appealed to him!! I highly recommend this for young, adventurous readers in the 5th grade!!

lionboy is very good!
By A Customer
Imagine your parents have been kidnapped, and you run off to the circus to try to find them with the help of the cats all around you, that you are able to communicate to. Charlie Ashanti does that in this book. In this time, many people have allergies and Charlie's parents, who are scientists, are trying to find a cure. Charlie finds that his parents have been have been kidnapped, and the teenager from down the block, Rafi, wants him to spend the week with him until Charlie's parents come back. Charlie's mother wrote something down for Charlie, and told him if he were ever to leave the house for an important reason, to take it with him. So Charlie packs a bag with the paper some lotions that his mother made to cure certain ailments, and his asthma medicine. At Rafi's house, after every one goes to bed, Charlie sneaks out and stows away on a boat. When the boat stops near a big ship blasting music, Charlie gets on the ship. The boat is a circus ship and Charlie is put to work. He has become the loin boy, and takes care of the lions. After talking to the cats on the streets, he writes and sends letters to his parents secretly. Talking to the lions, he hatches a plan to escape after the big circus show in Paris. At the show, he gets ready to leave, when he sees Rafi talking to Maccomo, the lion trainer, about selling Charlie. Charlie runs to get the lions to make their escape, but Rafi comes after them. One of the lions gives him a little snip0 to show who's boss and Rafi still slowly tries to run after them. Some lions disappear, and Charlie tries to find them. They come back to him with a weird lion-like creature with saber teeth. The lions jump on top of a train, and Charlie tries, but falls, and the engineer finds him, puts him on the train, and he falls asleep in a bed. Charlie wakes up and has breakfast and lunch with a King, who Charlie tells the whole story to, except about the cat-speaking, to the king. By now the lions on top of a moving train during a snow storm. Charlie gets the min a bathroom, feeds them, and gives them some of his mother's medicine. The king sees the lions, and agrees to help. All is well, but Charlie still hasn't found his parents. This book had a lot of action and was an overall good book.

This book had a lot of action. When Charlie heard that he was going to be sold, he ran to get the lions to leave as quickly as possible. To leave so no one would find out, the climbed a rope from shore to the boat. The lions had made it across, Charlie had to get across. As he scrambled across, Rafi found them and started to yell to get attention. Charlie was so surprised he nearly fell off. Inch by inch he made across and started to run, so Rafi wouldn't follow them. They ran further and further, to the train station. The lionesses could hear Rafi on their heels, so they hung back and swatted him into the river. Charlie was afraid that the lionesses had killed Rafi, because he heard a roar, a scream made by a human, and a splash into the water. When they reached the train station, the lions made it up on the train, but Charlie didn't. Charlie was afraid that he could not get on the train, and Rafi, he was alive, would catch up. He did get on the train, and he feared for the lions in the middle of a snowstorm, that they might die.

The book had detailed characters. Charlie is portrayed as a smart, clever, intelligent, boy that is very resourceful to his surroundings. Sometimes that does not come to his advantage, yet most of the time it does. Rafi is shown as a mean, cold-hearted boy, but into the story, you see that he is just caught up in the scheme of things and picks the wrong side to be on. Maccomo is the very wise, respected lion trainer, but you come to see that wise people can make foolish mistakes.

Lionboy had a very good plot. In the beginning of the book, Rafi is the easygoing kid that everyone wants to be friends with. He chooses that friend to be Charlie, and Charlie is honored to be his friend. But Charlie finds out why that relationship is for. Maccomo is the only thing that Charlie has to family on the boat, ever since his parents were kidnapped, and Charlie is betrayed that Maccomo would do such a thing as selling him, like a piece of meat for his beloved lions. When the lions disappear, Charlie fills with possible scenarios that could have happened to the lions. When the lions show up with this creature, Charlie is filled with horror and dread, but feels a closeness to it and decides that it can tag along.

Lionboy is a very good book with a well thought out plot, detailed characters, and tons of action.

one of the best books I've ever read
By A Customer
Lion Boy by Zizou Corder

The main characters in this book are Charlie and his mom and dad (Aneba and Magdalen), Rafi, maccamo, and of course the cats. Charlie is a young boy who just happens to speak cat. It all started when Charlie was a little baby, leopard blood got in one of his cuts, and from then on he started speaking to cats. Charlie parents Magdalen and Aneba, were kidnapped by someone who is unknown. They are scientists Charlie thinks that someone needs their smarts. Rafi Sadler, thought to be response able for Charlie's parents' kidnapping, a cool teenager, a criminal. Basically, Maccomo is a very calm person that trains Lions.

The book's plot is abut a boy named Charlie and his parents get kidnapped by someone. Ever since Charlie was a baby he could talk to cats. He uses this ability by getting the cats to spread the word out about his parents' kidnapping and tells them to find out information about and if they see Charlie, they can tell him what they know

about the kidnapping. Charlie goes through a series of ups and downs to find his parents he finds himself in very hard situations, very exiting situations, and very easy situations.

The book takes place in several places. One is on a boat; one is in England one is in France. In England, he finds out that his parents are kidnapped. In France he makes an encounter (I cannot tell you because it would ruin the book). On the boat he becomes a member of a circus (a Lion Boy).

The theme of Lion Boy is the extraordinary ability that Charlie has, he can talk to cats! Charlie uses this ability to find his parents by, as I told you earlier he gets a rumor out and he tells them to find out what they can and report to him.

I loved this story because it is very suspenseful and has a twist to it. I mainly liked it because I am very interested in cats. I hope you liked my report have a nice day!
