Pumpkinflowers: A Soldier's Story, by Matti Friedman

“A book about young men transformed by war, written by a veteran whose dazzling literary gifts gripped my attention from the first page to the last.” —The Wall Street Journal

“Friedman’s sober and striking new memoir . . . [is] on a par with Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried -- its Israeli analog.” —The New York Times Book Review

It was just one small hilltop in a small, unnamed war in the late 1990s, but it would send out ripples that are still felt worldwide today. The hill, in Lebanon, was called the Pumpkin; flowers was the military code word for “casualties.” Award-winning writer Matti Friedman re-creates the harrowing experience of a band of young Israeli soldiers charged with holding this remote outpost, a task that would change them forever, wound the country in ways large and small, and foreshadow the unwinnable conflicts the United States would soon confront in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere.

Pumpkinflowers is a reckoning by one of those young soldiers now grown into a remarkable writer. Part memoir, part reportage, part history, Friedman’s powerful narrative captures the birth of today’s chaotic Middle East and the rise of a twenty-first-century type of war in which there is never a clear victor and media images can be as important as the battle itself.

Raw and beautifully rendered, Pumpkinflowers will take its place among classic war narratives by George Orwell, Philip Caputo, and Tim O’Brien. It is an unflinching look at the way we conduct war today.

Review
“In Pumpkinflowers: A Soldier’s Story Mr. Friedman has written a top-notch account of this under-analyzed war, persuasively arguing that it heralded a new style of combat in the Middle East, though no one knew it at the time.” —Jennifer Senior, The New York Times

“This superb book is partly a history of the war, partly a personal memoir, and partly a work of political analysis. But mainly it is an effort to tell the story of the young men who fought to defend something “the size of a basketball court”—not all of whom survived. Pumpkinflowers is rich enough to allow different readers to draw their own political conclusions, if they choose to draw them at all. Above all, it is a book about young men transformed by war, written by a veteran whose dazzling literary gifts gripped my attention from the first page to the last.” —Bret Stephens, The Wall Street Journal

“Sober and striking…on par with Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried” – its Israeli analog.” —The New York Times Book Review

“…phenomenal…extremely moving…” —Bari Weiss, The Wall Street Journal

“…compelling…”
—Parade.com

“Matti Friedman’s powerful memoir of his IDF service in Lebanon in the late-’90s foreshadows the complexities of 21st-century warfare.” —The New York Jewish Week

“Pumpkinflowers is a beautifully written, gut-wrenching book. … a poetic account of an Israeli army veteran's time in southern Lebanon.” —Shelf Awareness

“Friedman, a journalist and author of “The Aleppo Codex,” writes with great feeling and insight…. The author’s account of military life transcends the particulars of this tale.” —Christian Science Monitor

“Powerful account of youthful Israelis maturing, fighting, and dying at a forgotten Lebanon outpost. In this limber, deceptively sparse take on the Middle East's tightening spiral of violence, Friedman combines military history and personal experience on and off the line in deft, observant prose. The narrative is reminiscent of novels by Denis Johnson and Robert Stone, linking combat's violent absurdity to the traumatized perspectives of individual participants. A haunting yet wry tale of young people at war, cursed by political forces beyond their control, that can stand alongside the best narrative nonfiction coming out of Afghanistan and Iraq.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“Remarkably educational and heartfelt: Friedman’s experiences provide a critical historical perspective on the changing climate of war in the Middle East, shifting from short official conflicts into longer unwinnable wars full of guerilla tactics and the deliberate creation of media narratives and images. His lyrical writing, attention to detail, and personal honesty draw the reader into empathy along with understanding. Friedman’s memoir deserves wide readership." —Publishers Weekly, starred review

“fast and engaging… A compelling war memoir containing elements of terror, observation, boredom, and grim (at times absurd) humor. This is an excellent read…” —Library Journal, starred review

“A compelling narrative, freighted with explosive geopolitical implications.” —Booklist, starred review

When I went back to the Pumpkin in the fall of 2002 I thought it was a conclusion--an end to that war, and to the disquiet it left me and the others it touched. But I know now that I was wrong. It wasn’t a conclusion. On the hill in 1995 we had been at the start of something: of a new era in which conflict surges, shifts, or fades but doesn’t end, in which the most you can hope for is not peace, or the arrival of a better age, but only to remain safe as long as possible. None of us could have foreseen how the region would be seized by its own violence--the way Syria, a short drive from the outpost, would be devoured, and Iraq, and Libya, and Yemen, and much of the Islamic world around us. The outpost was the beginning. The present day might still be the beginning. The Pumpkin is gone, but nothing is over. —from Pumpkinflowers

“Poignant and fascinating. Matti Friedman tells a war story with a journalist’s rigor and eye for detail, and a poet’s touch. He manages to be lyrical, graceful, and deeply evocative even when tackling the harshest subjects imaginable.” —Lucette Lagnado, author of The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit

“Evocative, emotionally wrenching, and yet clear-eyed and dispassionate, Matti Friedman’s haunting war memoir reminds one of Michael Herr’s unforgettable Vietnam memoir, Dispatches.”—Kai Bird, author of The Good Spy

“A historical jigsaw puzzle and an examination of Israel’s fraught national identity. Friedman illuminates the confusion at the heart of the conflict and chillingly echoes America’s own slide into prolonged wars in the Middle East.” —Siobhan Fallon, author of You Know When the Men Are Gone

“Inspiring, heartbreaking, illuminating. Matti Friedman’s brilliant account of a forgotten war seen through the lens of a simple soldier is at once a coming-of-age story and an essential chronicle about how the twenty-first century was born.”—Yossi Klein Halevi, author of Like Dreamers

A Good Account of Israeli Citizen Soldiers Serving in Southern Lebanon
By Fred J. Mauren
A good story about the coming of age / rite of passage experience that all young Israeli's go through when they serve in the military. In this instance it was against the backdrop of serving in the buffer zone of southern Lebanon in the mid-nineties. The buffer was supposed to prevent terrorists from infiltrating into northern Israel but the isolated strongpoints ended up being targets for Hezballah attacks. Many Israeli military casualties were incurred which led to protests in Israel and ultimately withdrawal from Lebanon. Years later the author visits Lebanon and hears the Hezballah account of the conflict. The Israeli withdrawal was considered a victory by Hezballah.

This is a good account of citizen soldiers serving in direct defense of their country.

By Lawrence Loewy
As someone who is a big supporter of Israel and has visited twice from the US, my thoughts of what should be done next to finally obtain peace change everyday. Two state solution, more settlements, the left, the right, etc. This book gave me many more thoughts to add to the equation. When you can read history written by someone who was there, nothing beats that. The way Matti Friedman incorporated his own experiences as well as those of many other brave soldiers made it more realistic. An extra bonus was the incorporation of his own family into the story. My next trip to Israel will definitely include a visit to the cemetery at Kibbutz Dawna to visit the memorial to the 73 dead IDF s

A memoir of the origins of the modern Middle East
By Alexander Joyner
This book won't get the attention it deserves because it details the experiences of a soldier in a military force that gets little sympathetic coverage. Nevertheless, it is honest, creative, introspective, and beautifully written.

If you REALLY want to know.....
By Christopher Mitchell
Usually truly great things are inherently simple. The AS/400 is one of the best computers ever made and the ideas behind it are simple. The execution is insanely complicated and this book attempts to explain it. It doesn't get much better than having the man behind the machine discuss it.

The inside story of a revolutionary computing system
By A Customer
This book is an exceptionally well-written description of the AS/400. It describes in some detail the internal architecture of both hardware and software. It explains the reasons behind design decisions. Though not a comic strip it contains helpful diagrams to assist the explanations. The AS/400 contains revolutionary concepts not yet found in other less advanced operating systems. It has demonstrated its ability to adapt and coexist with new and superficially rival technologies. Anyone who wants to understand what a real engineer does, to get major insights into and inspiration for software and hardware design cannot afford to ignore this book. To describe it as 'trash', as one reviewer has, is a reflection on the reviewer, not the book.

The best iSeries book ever!
By Robert J. Cancilla
Did you ever wonder about why IBM is pushing JAVA? Worried about the future of the AS/400? Concerned about personal computers or PC servers that have faster cpu speeds than an iSeries? You must read this book then! Only Frank Soltis could provide the highly readable in depth analysis of the internal architecture that appears to becoming the basis for the entire eServer line of computers to be built by IBM in the future.
For many of us who have invested heavily in the AS/400 and are worried about its future this book should put those fears to rest and demonstrate clearly how this amazing machine and its even more incredible layered operating system will be the basis for IBM's future!

A Philosophy of the Hunt
By Kenneth D. Gartrell
This is an excellent book which details the Ortega y. Gasset philosophy of hunting. It is surprising how little reader interest there is in the book. I would consider it a must read for those who still hunt.

Ortega y. Gasset bases his thinking on a combination of anthropology, history and natural sciences. The basic idea is that hunting is an ancient occupation of man, it is part of the definition of man's place in nature and it is ingrained into the genetic code of all of us.

In this way, Ortega y. Gasset reveals that by hunting, people fulfill their biological imperatives, realize their ability to transcend time and find their primitive being which predates recorded history.

The work is primarily a philosophical justification of hunting. I believe Ortega y. Gasset proves his point convincingly. However, that hardly matters because his analysis certainly evokes the right question which is, "Why do we hunt?"

Meditations on Hunting
By D. Ives
This is not a "how to" book on hunting, it is a classic study of "why" people hunt. This philosophical treatise was written in 1942 in Lisbon, Spain, and has been cited frequently over the years.

It is not an easy read, in that to appreciate what the author is presenting, one must give it some thought. The value to me is this requirement for contemplation.

This hardcover printing, with dust cover, is nicely produced on quality paper complete with etchings and footnotes. The only quibble I have is the font size on the footnotes can be a strain for older eyes...

If you hunt or want to better understand hunting, I highly recommend this book.

like it or not
By DanangDoc
Depending on which school of anthropology you subscribe to, "humans" have been on the earth in excess of 5 million years. Through the vast majority of that time, we have been hunter/gatherers. The genes remain; like it or not, we are hunters. Whether you're a serious hunter, a "weekend warrior", buy your meat wrapped in cellophane or an ardent vegetarian, you will enjoy the intelligent, philosophical discussion here.

Hope Unseen: The Story of the U.S. Army's First Blind Active-Duty Officer, by Cap. Scotty Smiley

Blindness became Captain Scotty Smiley’s journey of supreme testing. As he lay helpless in the hospital, he resented the theft of his dreams—becoming a CEO, a Delta Force operator, or a four-star general.

With his wife Tiffany’s love and the support of his family and friends, Scotty’s response became God’s transforming moment. The injury only intensified his indomitable spirit. Since the moment he jumped out of a hospital bed and forced his way through nurses and cords to take a simple shower, Captain Scotty Smiley has climbed Mount Rainier, won an ESPY as Best Outdoor Athlete, surfed, skydived, become a father, earned an MBA from Duke, taught leadership at West Point, commanded an army company, and won the MacArthur Leadership Award.

Scotty and Tiffany Smiley have lived out a faith so real that it will inspire you to question your own doubts, push you to serve something bigger than yourself, and encourage you to cling to a Hope Unseen.

Review
“Scotty Smiley’s story is one all Americans should hear. It will inspire them in tough times and help them through some of the difficult challenges they face in life.” (Senator Bob Dole)

"I have known Scotty Smiley for nearly ten years—since the beginning of his friendship with my son Edward at West Point. He was a role model for our family before his injury, and his impact on us has only grown since that day in Mosul. Scotty has an incredible story to tell and God is using him in a remarkable way. All of the Grahams look forward to reading and sharing Scotty's story with millions." (Franklin Graham)

“Scotty Smiley is an American Hero! Scotty and Tiffany have been an inspiration to the Duke Community, to Team USA Basketball, and to me personally. He shared his story with our Olympic Gold Medal– winning basketball team, and now he shares it with all of us to show how character ultimately wins.” (Coach Mike Krzyzewski)

“Scotty's story has not only motivated me to trust in the Lord, but also to make the most of all circumstances in life, good and bad. Scotty is the epitome of the old adage, ‘when life hands you a lemon, make lemonade.’ Life handed him a gigantic lemon and he's in turn trusted God and is making lemonade by the barrel. I look forward to helping spread his example to people everywhere.” (Tyler Brayton, Defensive Lineman, Carolina Panthers)

“Beyond the extraordinary courage and hope and faith in God that this book brought to life, it was just impossible to put down. Riveting.” (Patrick Lencioni, president of The Table Group; author of The Five Dysfunctions of a Team)

"It's been said, 'The worth of one's character is measured by the trial of adversity.' Hope Unseen is a compelling, inspiring, true story about courage, faith, and character revealed. You'll never want to complain about your circumstances again!" (LTG R. L. VanAntwerp, US Army)

"I love a great story, and the story of Scotty Smiley is not only a great story of a true hero, but this gem is so well written that you will cry, laugh, and cheer as you turn the pages." (Dave Ramsey, New York Times bestselling author)

"Captain Scotty Smiley was put to the ultimate test of faith and passed with flying colors, turning what was intened for evil into good. His determination to overcome and to allow God to be honored in the telling of his story is richly conveyed through this book." (Steven Curtis Chapman, Grammy Award–winning artist, and Mary Beth Chapman)

About the Author
Captain Scotty Smiley is the Army’s only active-duty blind officer. He lost the use of both eyes when a car bomber blew himself up in front of Scotty’s vehicle. A recipient of the bronze star and Purple Heart, he currently teaches the core course in leadership at West Point. Scotty and his wife Tiffany are the proud parents of two young children.

Doug Crandall served in the Army for thirteen years, including the last five at West Point where he was an award-winning leadership teacher and later the Executive Officer to the Dean. Doug now lives in Richland, Washington, with his wife Stephanie and their children.

4 Hours
By Nikki H.
I pre-ordered this book at the recommendation of my Military Science teacher, who was CPT Smiley's platoon sergeant at the time of the VBIED attack that took his eyesight. I received it on a day where I was going to be on a plane for 5 hours, after going an entire night with no sleep finishing homework. I opened the book in the airport with no intention of actually reading it, because I had every intention of sleeping on the plane.

I finished the book in 4 hours.

Maybe I have a slightly biased opinion of the book- I have been privileged enough to personally meet CPT Smiley and hear him talk about his experiences, as well as being present at his book signing a few days after I finished it. But regardless, the story is touching, honest, and heart wrenching. I cried on the plane twice, both times having the person next to me choked up describing the book and the parts of it. I also caught myself laughing and smiling to myself, rejoicing where the author rejoiced.

I have truly never read a better book. CPT Smiley's story of the return of his faith, as well as the amazing faith of his wife, is unparalleled. I have recommended this book to EVERYONE I have talked to. You will not be able to put the book down once you start it.

and have thoroughly enjoyed hearing (Yes
By Trina
Almost finished reading, and have thoroughly enjoyed hearing (Yes! It reads just as I would imagine Scotty telling his story aloud -- which is nice.) The imagery, thoughts, feelings are well-explained so I "get it." His faith is so real, complete with the mountains and valleys to strengthen and deepen any reader's own beliefs. Plus, my kid sister is good friends with Scotty and his in-laws, so had to finally snatch a copy for our home library. Thank you to Scotty, his family, and all our service men and women everywhere. God bless you always!

Great Inspirational Story
By David Graves
I first heard about Scott Smiley when watching NBA Today while working out one lunchtime. His talk with the 2006 US World Championships basketball team was brought tears to many eyes. Later, when I found that my former Cadet Basic Training squad leader Doug Crandall was co-writing a book with Scotty, I was hooked and have been eagerly anticipating the launch for over a year. The book definitely doesn't disappoint. Scotty pulls no punches on his feelings of isolation and hopelessness but also shows that God has much more in store for him than he can imagine. When I feel down in the dumps, I try to remember Scotty and that I need to get over my minor problems. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

The Destruction of Sodom: What We Have Learned from Tall el-Hammam and Its Neighbors, by Phillip J Silvia

"A most interesting read and a compelling empirically-based hypothesis that, more convincingly than previous attempts, brings biblical accounts into accord with modern scientifically-derived understanding of the cosmos. If supported by subsequent and exhaustive research, this is not only ground-breaking archaeology but a cautionary narrative for present and future generations. The fate of Tall el-Hammam/Sodom and its impressive, if unheralded, Jordan Valley Middle Bronze Age civilization will eventually be repeated. It's not a matter of 'if' but 'when'." -- Malcolm A. LeCompte, Ph.D., retired Associate Professor and former Research Director, Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research, Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, NC, and cosmic impact researcher.

About the Author
Dr. Phillip J. Silvia is field archaeologist and supervisor with the Tall el-Hammam Excavation Project in Jordan. With a degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University (Boston, MA), a Master of Divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (South Hamilton, MA), and over 40 years of experience in engineering, software development, project management, and pastoral ministry, Phil brought a unique perspective to his pursuit of a Ph.D. in Archaeology and Biblical History at Trinity Southwest University (Albuquerque, NM), focusing on the Middle Bronze Age civilization-ending destruction of the Middle Ghor, the event that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities of the Jordan Valley plain north of the Dead Sea. This book, The Destruction of Sodom: What We Have Learned from Tall el-Hammam and Its Neighbors, presents the fascinating results of his dissertation research in an easy-to-read format that will undoubtedly add to the ongoing dialog concerning this ancient city.

Ever wonder just HOW God did something?
By Donald E. Shannon
Full disclosure - Phil and I are friends and I have followed his progress on the digs over the years. This is a definitive work on the subject of Sodom and the likely cause for its destruction. Phil's approach is both biblical and scientific - something that is somehow more believable than simply scientific. I heard the story of Sodom and Gomorra in Sunday School, and I read it in the Bible. Now we see the physical evidence of Sodom and its destruction in a cataclysmic event. Dr. Silvia not only walks us through the process of how we know this is Sodom, how it was destroyed and why the region lay fallow for some 700 years after the fact. A good read for all.

God does not do magic tricks
By Peter A. Silvia
Full disclosure: Phil is my brother. This well-documented book shows the benefit of taking a look at biblical phenomena through the lens of science. No that is not a contradiction: God does not have to resort to magic tricks to make things happen in our version of reality. Phil's technical skills and contacts led him to connect the archaeological dots in a way that shows clearly an entirely rational explanation of the destruction of Sodom through ordinary, though thankfully rare (within the span of a human lifetime), natural events. Religious interpretation of these events is only lightly touched upon in this book.

This book is the newest and best about the subject
By Veli Voipio
I've started to read this book although I've know already quite a lot about this Tall al-Hammam project. This book is the newest and best about the subject. One thing I would like to see is the dating of the glass (melt rock) itself scientifically, maybe using some paleomagnetic method.
