Not All I For...

The book was helpful in a few areas, such as explaining "pilot-speak" in such areas as what happens in turns, climbs, dives, & other aspects of Aerial Combat Maneuvers, touching on energy management and such, and also on gunnery.

However I also thought it was basically a print version of the sim's "Read Me" file. Personally, I wished that it went more in-depth on importing user-built after-market aircraft, missions, and campaigns.

Well if the book is anything like the game it should be terrific. I recieved the game two weeks ago and haven't stopped playing yet. This books promises to maximze the fun while not taking away any of the realism.

One of only a handful to simplify the math without dumbing it down!

First, even though the title of this book is "neuroscience," it really IS in the newer field of computational vision that includes both human and machine vision. My field is robotics, and I loved this book!

The first difference between this book and dozens of others, it that it IS a math book on computational vision, not neuron firing and spiking, and attempting to understand vision with "older biology." By this I mean that "newer" biology includes dynamical systems, differential equations, algorithms and computation, even if not overtly discussing machine vision.

The second difference is that it is one of only a few that not only cover the math, but also explain it in English so that those who don't have a year of linear algebra can also "get" it with a little effort. A few of the others include:

1. The CLASSIC by David Marr that started the whole movement of "Can this vision thing (in humans) be the brain using numerical methods to solve Fourier transforms and translate spherical geometry-- Vision: A Computational Investigation into the Human Representation and Processing of Visual Information. This is "old" but still relevant, and you should be able to get a good deal on it used.

2. The MOST RECENT computational vision text by Davies. This is 2012, 900+ pages and NOT cheap. However, given the over 50 titles in this area, Davies is the ONLY ONE that takes the time to painstakingly explain complex engineering at a bright High School level. Not explicitly on the neuro side, but contains a LOT of computational vision topics: Computer and Machine Vision, Fourth Edition: Theory, Algorithms, Practicalities. The next closest text costs over $200 US and isn't nearly as introductory or self study student friendly. Those with a bio background will LOVE this way more than buying 5 separate image and digital signal processsing books, only to find they are way over our heads.

Beyond those two are only a few others that take the time to explain the math both with figures/ diagrams and tables as well as the English and the math: STONE: Seeing: The Computational Approach to Biological Vision; Zeki (one of the best treatments of color vision): Vision of the Brain; and Palmer: Vision Science: Photons to Phenomenology.

There are many others that cover the same material as these fine texts, but they are solid math, assume you can handle differential equations and linear algebra well, and don't give intuitive "co-explanations" for the math. This text, as well as those above, take the time to do that, making it/them ideal for introductions for students coming to math, robotics, machine vision and engineering from other areas (bio, neuro, medicine) as well as auto didacts. Highly recommended. TIP: CHECK both Amazon third parties and Abe books (amazons partner) for these titles USED for significant discounts. I DO NOT recommend these titles for e-readers like Kindle because the math formulas get slaughtered, you'll want the figures close, and you'll want to mark in the margins.

Awesome anatomy coloring book!

Wow..I love this book!! It took me months to decide whether to get this one or Kapit and Elson's coloring book. I tried a couple of coloring in Kapit's but I finally settled on this one, and am very pleased. I prefer this book - the book is well organized, the main points (key words) are bolded. The text is MUCH clearer. The Information about muscle origin, insertion, innervation, action are neatly organized into tables. There are a couple of other tables as well - Ligaments and attachments, features and characteristics for various organ systems....etc. The images are much clearer and less busy. While it's true that the margins of each anatomical feature are not as well delineated as Kapit's book, I find this to be less important, since in the body (cadaver or real) there isn't necessarily a line to separate out the features anyways. You can always double check with your anatomy book or an atlas. Some of the features are only named by number on the coloring page, which I use as a quiz for myself. Overall, great addition for studying anatomy! Thank you Dr. Hansen. Happy Coloring!

Easy for a noob that has never read any anatomy ...

Going to do a physical therapy course next year and wanted to prep. This book clearly maps all the major muscles, bones and tendons in the body. Easy for a noob that has never read any anatomy before. Learning very quickly doing a little bit each night. Would reccomend/10

"active" easily trumping "passive" learning

The Netter's Anatomy Coloring Book undeniably exemplifies the epitome of "active" as opposed to "passive"learning, and "active" easily trumping passive. Using illustrations, then coloring it, compels seeing, touching then learning. Simply put, it is "eye to hand to mind to memory" . What can be more effective? This book came about from the genius of an artist-physician himself, whose work is the most widely used anatomical medical illustration in the entire world.

As I am not a scientifically inclined individual, I am not able to explain it, but suffice it to say that the book is well thought of so much so that the coloring exercises, labels, texts, bullet points or essential material and tables are carefully chosen to emphasize important aspect of the anatomy for effective learning purposes.

In addition, it employs repetition as an effective method of learning and memorization.

I bought this for myself out of curiosity while I was browsing through the Amazon market place for coloring books to purchase as I have recently got into coloring. I thought why not learn and have fun at the same time? Especially since getting up in age, I thought stimulating my brain a tiny bit would be beneficial.

This is a WONDERFUL MUST HAVE BOOK and a PERFECT GIFT item to children showing signs of interest in the sciences or medical field, or just for anyone for that matter to encourage learning. Have I had a book such as this while I was in grade school or maybe even high School, I wouldn't be as intimidated with science specifically Anatomy as much if learning was this fun, interactive, and creative.

The book comprise of 11 chapters each representing the 11 systems namely minus the 1st which is 1) Orientation and Introduction 2) Skeletal 3) Muscular 4) Nervous 5) Cardiovascular 6) Lymphatic 7 ) Respiratory 8)Gastrointestinal 9) Urinary 10) Reproductive and 11) Endocrine
Each I have not gone through all the pages yet (obviously) but each page or exercise have not only the anatomy to color but the REAL DEAL ANATOMY LESSON.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

Highly Recommended

The book discussed in these pages is brilliant, well done and highly recommended. I have just finished reading it, more or less non-stop, in 2 full days. As with his earlier work (The Alchemical Body), the author's research is detailed and professional - and anyone calling it "pathetic" (anonymous review May 26 2004) or "saddening" (anonymous review May 29 2004) only admits in so doing that he or she has personal problems with the sexual aspects of Tantra as they are discussed in "The Kiss" open and honestly by David Gordon White.

Someone else called his conclusions "controversial" (anonymous review June 16 2004), yet the only "controversial" thing I can find in this book is the author's honesty - and one can only congratulate him for this - and of course he's intelligent enough to have foreseen that his theme and stance won't be liked by many - both in India and within the "New Age Tantra" community across the hemispheres.

To everyone who has read actual Tantric texts - even in translation - White's conclusions are fully in concordance with previously published material AND with actual practice - the real merit of this book lies in presenting us with more and new material (translated by the author), and by connecting and combining previously difficult to relate evidence.

So what is the book actually about that shocks so many sensitive minds? It is the fact that White establishes more firmly than has been done (in scholarly circles) before, that Tantric ritual makes use of the fluids that arise from the genitals - both female and male. And we're not only talking about orgasmic emissions, we're also talking about the magical blood we call menstruation. And we're talking about oral sex. So the author must have known that he'll get plenty of `flames' for various reasons - and I wish him that he is immune to it.

Congratulations, DGW, for this great book - and for the Vira balls to write it. May the Yogini grant you many more sweet en enlightening Kisses.

A thought provoking book and indispensable research source

David White gives clear, detailed insights into the origins and evolution of Tantric practices. Serious students of South Asian religious history will find his meticulous work a wealth of information filled with practical examples, diverse sources and original accounts rarely, if ever, this accessible in English.

The work's logical analysis of Tantric traditions visits its roots, components, rituals and development through the centuries. White states his goal "to reconstruct a history as well, perhaps, as a religious anthropology, a sociology, and a political economy of (mainly Hindu) Tantra, from the medieval period down to the present day." Indeed, this is what his book accomplishes. Unlike other works focusing on a particular aspect of Tantra, White takes a holistic approach that includes texts, imagery, politics, art, architecture, social relationships and practice in his sources.

His linguistic abilities enabled him to include translated excerpts from more than 25 ancient Sanskrit works. He also references many modern sources that had me frequently returning to Amazon to order more books!

White's creative vocabulary delights and stimulates; Acoustic phoneme, aestheticize, cosmeticized, countercasuistry, dissimulation, doctrine of radical nonduality, gerocomy, gnoseological, homologous, hegemonic, nondiscursive agglomerations, occulted, photeme, photic grapheme, polyvalence, postmodernisme oblige, semanticize, scholasticist, soteriology and typology are a few examples of the verbal tools he wields to make his finer points.

The resulting prose is necessarily dense; a complex treatment by an expert immersed in his topic. Most paragraphs cite multiple sources, all thoroughly described in his bibliography and copious endnotes. The book also includes more than 25 helpful illustrations that give visual representations of many concepts.

My only suggestion to improve future editions is that it would be helpful to add the following graphics: [1] Timelines - to illustrate chronological relationships of literary works, religious traditions and teachers referenced; [2] Hierarchical diagrams - to illustrate relationships among the multiple systems of gods, goddesses, demons, deities, yogis, yoginis, dakinis, etc. and; [3] Maps - to show geographical and temporal relationships in the spread of Tantric practices and related political systems.

Finally, I must comment on a few of the poor "reviews" of this work that sadly appear on Amazon. It is obvious that some people have not read the book. Like most fanatics, they leap to judge something they don't care to accept or understand.

In his five page preface, and in many other chapters, White makes it quite clear that he is a scholar with tremendous respect for Indian and Hindu religious traditions. His years of investigative effort in original sources establish strong pedigrees of origin that, in fact, enhance the basis of these traditions. The only groups White directly criticizes are "New Age" proponents of Tantra who have hijacked Indian culture and distorted it for commercial gain in the West. His historically accurate report is no threat to any tradition based on truth.

Bova supplies a new perspective on Elvis. No Graceland groupie she, the author was a Capitol Hill staffer on the Armed Services Committee when she met Presley in 1969 in Las Vegas during her vacation. She was unprepared for "how beautiful he was." The fraught and erratic love affair that followed lasted till 1972. Bova, writing with freelancer Nowels, draws a portrait of this larger-than-life star, surrounded by sycophants, drifting into drug abuse and yet still sensitive to his fans. Also intriguing is the fact that Bova struggled to stand up to the "King," to keep her job and her independence. Looking back she sees the star in a softer light than many tale tellers, stressing that he was "devoutly religious and believed in family values." But she also details how Elvis pressured her to take narcotics until she in turn became addicted. It all makes seductive reading, although one questions Bova's 100% recall of conversations and passing thoughts after more than two decades. Even taken with the obligatory grain of salt, this is a piquant and smoothly written addition to the Elvis canon. Photos not seen by PW. Here's a novel idea: a book about someone who knew Elvis Presley. At least Bova knew him in the biblical sense, which adds a little spice to what otherwise is as slight and silly as a Presley movie. Act one: Joyce Bova, 24-year-old Priscilla Presley lookalike who works on Capitol Hill, goes to Las Vegas where a backstage meeting with the King sets hearts fluttering. Act two: well, the flap copy says it best: "In a whirlwind romance that swept her from the corridors of Congress to the secluded verandas of Graceland, Joyce jeopardized her career and defied her strict Catholic upbringing to be with her lover." Act three: Bova gets pregnant, but when she tries to tell Elvis the news, he gives her his take on motherhood: mamas don't have sex after the baby is born. (Readers of Priscilla Presley's book will recall that the King suffered from an industrial-strength dose of the whore/madonna complex.) Act three, continued: Bova has an abortion, but that doesn't save a relationship riddled with too many drugs. As with so many who knew Elvis, Bova apparently has total recall of every conversation she ever had with the man. There's not much to remember, really, but it beats Bova's own musings on life: "I sat there by myself in the dark and thought and dreamed and fought that lonely battle we fight against our own insecurity, against the icy inner terror that freezes your guts and makes you shrink back from the big scary world out there." It may freeze your own guts to buy this book, but if there are Presley fans in your neighborhood--and there are--you have no choice. Ilene Cooper

Bova, a staff member of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, reveals all she knows about Elvis, but her subject has been so intensely overexposed that even the most intimate details sound familiar. In 1969, in Las Vegas, Bova and a friend were hand-picked from a line of waiting show-goers to meet Elvis backstage. Bova believes that her instant rapport with the King grew out of the fact that she is a twin, as Elvis was, although his brother died at birth. Thus began her three-year relationship with a man who was obviously troubled and affected by giant mood swings. Though her own personality remains in the background, Bova manages a no-nonsense outlook and explains that she stood by her man because of love, even though he was married and had complete disregard for her career. Presley had some odd ideas about women: He was so insistent on purity that she hesitated to inform him that she was not a virgin (``In a way he was right, it would be `new' for me,'' she thought about her prospective sexual experience with him), and when Bova was pregnant (unbeknownst to him), he explained that once a woman had given birth he could no longer be attracted to her (she subsequently had an abortion). Presley's addiction to sleeping pills was a constant problem, but Bova had trouble confronting him about it and took them herself at his insistence. Bova also outlines the King's spiritual side, which involved vague, self- important beliefs that he was teaching people through music and that he was ``put here on earth to serve a special purpose'' with his unique powers. A somewhat pathetic portrait of the entertainer limping toward death. Forever in Blue Jeans

Reading Elvisologist Allana Nash's recent book on the women who loved Elvis (BABY LET'S PLAY HOUSE), I became interested in Nash's account of Elvis's love affair with Joyce Bova, a Washington DC woman of whom I had never before heard. Nash provides quite a lengthy synopsis of the major events in this hush hush top secret romance, and I liked what I saw, so I bought I used copy of Bova's own memoir and dove right in. In a way, this turned out to be a mistake, since Nash had definitely given the highlights, but in eight pages instead of the 386 pages in the Bova book. But all I can say is, if this is how you like it, it's served up well in DON'T ASK FOREVER.

Nash had it right, Joyce was a pretty girl all right, but what cinched it for her with Elvis was the fact that she had a twin sister. We all know that the death of little Jesse was the central event in Elvis' life, and Joyce met him at a time ripe with spiritual renewal for Elvis, right at the time when he was beginning to fantasize of himself as a religious leader born to bring comfort and healing to billions. The twin thing, like a ribbon of celluloid film, somehow played in and out of the Jungian fantasies preoccupying him the early 1970s. He was one of twins, as was she: maybe they were meant to be together. In addition she was the twin, or nearly so, of his wife Priscilla, with whom he was still living an empty lie (or so says Bova). In fact when they went out together, fans always hurt Joyce's feelings by mistaking her for Priscilla and pestering her for autographs.

Twin-ness also haunts the book in terms of the Bobbie Gentry mystery. The charismatic country singer and songwriter was an acquaintance of Elvis at just this period, and now it turns out, that nearly every photo hitherto thought of to be picturing Elvis and Bobbie Gentry is, in actuality, a photo of Elvis and Joyce, who had to keep her love life a secret from the probing eyes of Capitol Hill, where she worked for the Armed Services Committee for the House of Representatives. We never do hear too much about her job, but Elvis had no compunction about calling Nixon and asking of Joyce could take a few days off here or there to visit him in Graceland or in Vegas.)

She soon became addicted to heavy drugs, under Elvis' tutelage. He particularly favored nembutal-like dolls when embarking on a bout of lovemaking, drugs so strong they put Joyce in a twilight sleep, barely able to tell where she was or where her body ended. This part of the book was the most compelling. Also we do get some glimpses into Elvis at the recording studio, especially during the making of the 1070 Christmas album. We see him leafing through dozens of demos, and Joyce is credited with persuading the King to record "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," which became "their song," and which she was always pleading with him to sing to her alone in concert.

Joyce got to meet most of the insiders in Elvis Presley's life, even being awarded an audience with the spooky, old, weird "Dodger" (Elvis' grandma Minnie.) Dodger is just plain obsessed. "A woman should have plenty of children. Then maybe you get lucky and one of 'em turns out good. I had five. None of 'em turned out too good, 'cept Vervon... cause he made Elvis." Elvis had fond memories of Ann-Margret (not the tortured ones other biographers would have us believe in) and not so fond ones of current co-star Mary Tyler Moore. Elvis had specialty shoppers on call who would bring literally dozens of pairs of shoes and boots at a time to his home, to let the King shop in peace. In one touching scene, Joyce points Elvis towards a pair of tan boots he might otherwise have rejected. She was important to him in little things, but as he always told her, don't ask forever,

A modern-day fairy tale......

Joyce Bova's account of her time with Elvis was a moving, but realistic, romantic tale of two different worlds. She is believable when she recounts her emotions, her fears, her hopes and dreams. The resemblance between Ms. Bova and Priscilla Presley is uncanny. And Joyce's intuition about Elvis is unbelievable. The heartbreak, the highs and the lows that she faces in her relationship with Elvis are ones that all women who have been in love can relate to. Joyce is a romantic, but a realist also. She is a strong lady, who does not resort to pity to interest an audience. She tells it like it is, warts and all.

Well written, easy read and throughly enjoyable.

Joyce and I have been very close friends for about 20 years, so I have known of her relationship with Elvis. Although I admit to not being an Elvis 'fan', I have always admired his talent and ,in many ways, the man she described him to be. I am an avid reader and though my choice of reading material would not be on Elvis, I had to read my friend's memoir.
I admire Joyce and admire her contribution in an intelligently written yet heart-warming book. The countless readers who feel they know Elvis will garner a greater insight into this complex man. I know Joyce and that is enough for me to respect and appreciate the candor and sincerity with which she wrote her book. I am not alone when I say that Joyce is a down-to-earth, forthright, sweetheart of a person who is still stunningly attractive and vivacious. (Joyce is also a very talented ballroom dancer who still performs and teaches out of her own dance studio.) More importantly, Joyce cares deeply about her friends. In particular, she cared very much about her depiction of the intimately personal relationship she shared with Elvis. I believe she has done so with an open heart and a sincere desire to fill in this gap of Elvis' life
After turning the last page of Joyce's book, anyone (man or woman)will go away feeling a real connection with her and an understanding of the extraordinary man she knew so well.
