Hair Test Interpretation: Finding Hidden Toxicities, by Andrew Hall Cutler

Hair Test Interpretation: Finding Hidden Toxicities is a practical book. The book starts out telling you how to interpret a hair test for mercury and other heavy metals. It provides a step by step discussion of this with figures to make this easy to do. It gives examples using actual hair test results from real people. Mercury interferes with how the hair element results come out ? mercury is often low and other minerals take unusual values. It is crucial for proper hair test interpretation to know how to recognize mercury’s characteristic signature. Mercury often causes retention of certain minerals. Arsenic, antimony, tin, titanium, zirconium and aluminum are elements many people retain too much of when they really have a mercury problem. Hair tests are worth doing because a surprising number of people diagnosed with incurable chronic health conditions actually turn out to have a heavy metal problem. Heavy metal problems are easy to correct. Hair testing allows the underlying problem to be identified and the chronic health condition often disappears with proper detoxification.

Potassium and sodium up with calcium and magnesium down means too much adrenaline but not enough cortisol. Potassium and sodium down with calcium and magnesium up means not enough cortisol, adrenaline and thyroid hormone. The usual blood tests won’t identify problems in time to avoid prolonged misery. Children accumulate antimony much more readily than adults. Children with antimony problems don’t like to be touched or looked at. Antimony is the flame retardant in children’s pajamas, mattresses, and much carpeting and upholstery. Antimony causes heart problems. Hair is a good measure of antimony. Lead is associated with reduced intelligence, behavior problems, learning disabilities, ADHD, lazy eye (amblyopia) and developmental delays in children. Adults may experience cognitive decline, gout, high blood pressure, vision problems, miscarriages, depression, irritability and sleep disturbances. Lead reduces long term memory, mercury reduces short term memory. Bismuth may cause neurological and hormone problems. It is in many make-up preparations, stomach remedies and diaper rash balms. Silver toxicity causes emotional lability and "theatrical" behavior.. Intellectual impairment and digestive disturbances are also possible. Vision problems and sensitivity to small glasses prescription changes occur with silver and arsenic, while mercury only causes vision problems High hair zinc usually indicates low body levels. Vegetarian diets and modern foods are low in zinc. High carbohydrate intake reduces zinc levels. Zinc deficiency causes intellectual impairment, growth failure and immune deficiency. 10% of today’s children are believed to be zinc deficient. Calcium levels in hair often move oppositely to body inventory. High hair calcium suggests calcium loss such as occurs in osteoporosis. People with high hair calcium often need to take more calcium.

Stunner!
By C. Qu
UPDATED REVIEW (23 APR 2016)

In hindsight, after many months/years of research it appears to me that Cutler's seductive approach to curing "hidden toxicities" (aka Mercury toxicity) is quite misleading and can be potentially very dangerous (there are a few exceptions though when the approach would be Ok). The reason for this is toxicity of DMSA (or DMPS) itself - as perhaps with all other synthetic chelators, their administration needs to be carefully assessed for two key considerations:

1. Did you evaluate the trade off? Does additional toxic burden caused by DMSA administration can be justified in terms of the current condition? Very strong DMSA side effects reported by thousands of users on the internet is not due to "mercury or lead chelation escaping their bodies" but by DMSA itself. It is an extremely potent thiol whose toxicity has not been thoroughly studied in the literature (believe me - it has not). It can invoke an array of systemic effects post administration ranging from endocrine to cardiovascular and psychosomatic problems. Let me repeat DMSA is not a safe remedy. It is a potent drug which has not been extensively studied for its toxicity. As with any antidotes - its administration can be justified only if there is a positive trade-off i.e. if it can help with a condition which is more debilitating or dangerous than the antidote itself.

2. Keep things in perspective. If you have a *recent* suspected organic mercury poisoning, Hg in your body halves naturally every 90 days. Because the decay is so rapid in a year the level of organic mercury will drop by a factor of 16 = 2^4 (as there are x4 90 days periods in one year). Which means that for most people with mild poisoning, if you stop eating seafood and mushrooms your Hg levels will likely to be undetectable in blood in about 1 to 2 years. In contrast, taking 50mg DMSA in weekly rounds every month will only accelarate this excretion by a small margin. Perhaps the factor will go up from 16 to 18. Does it justify subjecting your body to another harmful cocktail? Quantify your Hg levels yourself and make an informed decision.

3. One clear case when DMSA is justifiable is acute and recent poisoning. It is very easy to show you have one - your doctor will be talking to you after your blood and urine tests. For most people who are concerned with vaccines, silver fillings, seafood etc - you are most definitely below the thresholds set out in the reference texts your GP reads. In other words if your GP is NOT worried you should NOT take any synthetic chelator no matter how modern or sexy its name appears to you.

I still left two stars as Cutler's work is a substantial scientific contribution in my opinion. It is very dangerous though, because the readers are likely to be exhausted, desperate and probably quite disoriented. I think his advice although well intentioned should not be used by laymen - they will likely experience much more pain after what they had already been through.

I have no opinion about ALA - perhaps it's safe especially in smaller doses - my review covers only Cutler's DMSA/DMPS protocols.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

An absolute stunner. If you are not accustomed to reading very densely presented material (and slightly disorganised), please do not be put off by it. It contains an ocean of relevant, clinical, scientific and plain interesting material, the sheer amount and interconnectedness of ideas is absolutely terrific! It can be a great reference book to keep coming to over the years.

I have only minor problems with how easily Cutler dispenses advice about mainstream prescription drugs with no second thoughts (while he really should be warning about their dangerous side effects, something what he does with the rest of the stuffs in his book including even cabbage!), and also unsubstantiated rejection of certain substances in protocols (such as glutathione) . I guess my conciliation is that by the time a person grabs this type of the book, (s)he already learned how not to take things at their face values.

4 out of 5. If it was properly edited, more carefully worded and organized would have been 10 out of 5.

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot, for the readers who are aesthetically sensitive, the book is just a stack of A4 scans stapled together on the edge. It is not what makes a book great or poor, but still, do not expect to see a long lasting binding here. Not that we have a choice. :)

Turned my life around
By William Chester
I spent about a year scouring the internet, trying desperately to find out why my health was rapidly deteriorating. I kept running across symptom lists for heavy metal toxicity and found it to perfectly match me, so I started posting on [...] about it hoping for an answer. A friend recommended that I get a Hair Elements test from [...] and at the same time read Andy Cutlers two books; this being the first and Amalgam Illness being the other.

In order to get support from persons trained to interpret these tests he recommended I submit my hair test to: [...] and follow all the instructions on that page

So I went along with it having nothing else to do for my health. It turned out that my copper levels were through the roof(hair test #506) due to acidic water and copper piping. Water filters were implemented and I began supplementing many things to counter the copper such as zinc, calcium, magnesium, and molybdenum among others; all of these things have been recommended by this book. Im feeling far better since reading Hair Test Interpretations only a month or so ago, after years of trying everything for IBS, hypothyroidism, and adrenal fatigue this has quickly addressed and alleviated my symptoms while at the same time slowly destroying the source of the illness

I would recommend this to all doctors, any who have an unexplainable ailment, and anybody concerned about health

The work of a prodigy; a must read for those with chronic ailments
By lector avidus
I read this book in an effort to hear all sides in the controversy about mercury toxicity, and came to be strongly convinced that this is the best book on the subject.

Andrew Cutler's first book, Amalgam Illness, is about how to treat mercury intoxications. Most doctors do not acknowledge the existence of dental amalgam caused mercury intoxications, but if you familiarize yourself with the works of other dentists on mercury intoxications, and the medical literature, there is a compelling case that these fillings have catastrophic effects in some people, while most tolerate them just fine. Mercury intoxications are bizarre in that they have many, far more than 20, completely different sets of symptoms. In his first book, Cutler suggests that you diagnose a mercury intoxication with a check list of symptoms. This may work, but may not feel right, as you are diagnosing an "unacknowledged" illness with highly diffuse symptoms by means of seemingly unrelated symptoms which can be explained by many different illnesses. Hair Test Interpretation is the answer to this worry, and an introduction to diagnosing other metal intoxications. As Cutler became more experienced in treating such intoxications, he found a much simpler and more easily understandable way to diagnose them.

Doctor's Data, the largest provider of hair tests in the US, reports that in most people you can come to an extremely accurate idea of how much amalgam they have in their mouth by consulting their hair mercury content. Several doctors have told me that they have seen people have extremely low hair mercury levels in their hair, levels vastly lower than expected in light of their amalgam exposure, whose hair mercury content skyrocketed into the 98th and higher percentiles after they were treated for mercury toxicity, that is after mercury was removed. Their explanation was that toxic concentrations of mercury can somehow impair the body's ability to excrete mercury through the hair. Cutler reports the same phenomenon, and has compiled a list of 5 sets of anomalies that he saw when hair mercury excretion was "jammed." If you believe Cutler, as I do, this book provides you with a 2 minute test that allows you to determine whether chronic, irreversible, illnesses which most doctors insist will be life-long ailments are actually misdiagnosed mercury intoxications.

Nor is Dr. Cutler the only scientist to hold these beliefs. I have obtained extracts of a 1400 page long post-doctoral thesis written, but curiously not published, at Georgetown University in 1959-1960 that confirms the vast majority of the claims advanced in this book, that dentists and their flawed treatments have caused a veritable epidemic of suffering and ruined lives. The author continued his post-doctoral studies at Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania, and has been so haunted by what he believes to be millions of tragic and unnecessary cases of invalidity and death that he has given a sizable portion of his income to informing people about his research. Other renowned researchers report findings that coincide with Dr. Cutler's claims, but which cannot be reconciled with what I have come to view as macabre fairy tales advanced by the American Dental Association.

Perhaps more importantly, this book includes many case stories of people who overcame harrowing woes with Cutler's therapy, with "before" and "after" hair tests. Today, when many doctors sneer when you talk of amalgam illness, these case stories are invaluable, as they provide you indisputable evidence that Cutler is right, and the scripture of the gods in white coats is, in regards to mercury intoxication, as useless as compendia of voodoo chants. In this context it should also be mentioned that since amalgam intoxications are a taboo in what is called "medicine" in many developed countries, many of the treatments advocated by physicians willing to do treat "fringe" ailments have not been developed with anything near the rigor with which medical treatments, and in particular medical treatments for serious disorders, are developed and tested. I know of physicians who are convinced that they have seriously injured their patients with ill-conceived treatments for mercury intoxications, and who are aghast at the treatments some of their peers offer for these intoxications. The treatment Cutler advocates is the most cautious and conservative treatment regimen of which I know.

A small quibble: This book would have been even better had Cutler included references to the scientific literature pertaining to how hair absorb metals. All the same, this is the work of a genius. It has taken me more than a year, and much ancillary research, to conclude that Dr. Cutler is correct in at least many of his assertions. Allow me to conclude this review by noting that the Nobel Prize has been awarded for lesser accomplishments.
